Guest Drizz Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 Hey guys. does anyone know how to get the vega to connected to a home (Windows 7 based) network? Would be cool if I could stream videos from my PC. Doesn't it involve something call DNLA?
Guest Drizz Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 OK I've found a great program to stream music called 2player. I can'y believe just how well it works and it's full screen.
Guest obb Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 To actually stream video ... i dont think its possible on the vega ... two reasons.. one the wifi on the vega is pitifully slow .. too slow to stream video imo ...other than web based stuff ... secondly there isnt any programs that i have that actually stream ... they all copy the file over first ... thats not streaming.

Guest debs626 Posted November 29, 2010 Report Posted November 29, 2010 (edited) Try Gmote I've not tested it on my vega but have it on my xperia x10 and it works well. The app gives you an option to play on your device, this function is still in beta but I've not had a problem with it. You need to install the server program on your target PC http://www.gmote.org/server Just checked the site and these are the file formats that are supported :- mp3, mp4, jpeg It states that .avi(divx) do not work ...... but they do :P Edited November 29, 2010 by debs626
Guest arad85 Posted November 30, 2010 Report Posted November 30, 2010 To stream anything to the device with a server of any description, you need a compatible player. If you are after streaming hi-def video, that means streaming through the supplied player as you'll need the hardware acceleration to play them properly. I don't have a Vega here yet, so can't comment, but I would suspect that it only does file based playing - which would mean some form of SMB sharing would need to be enabled.
Guest Pyr0x64 Posted November 30, 2010 Report Posted November 30, 2010 (edited) all we need is a compatible cifs.ko module. (could be one of the reasons Paul is asking Advent about the kernel source) with a cifs.ko module, we would be able to mount network shares, browse the files using any file manager on the advent and stream/play media as if it was on the device Edited November 30, 2010 by Pyr0x64
Guest debs626 Posted November 30, 2010 Report Posted November 30, 2010 Just tested the Gmote app on my Vega and it works fine. As arad85 has mentioned you do need to have a compatible player on your device for Video streaming. I think it works better on the Vega than it does on my Xperia X10 :P

Paulo Similar situation myself. 2 PC's, 2 laptops, DLNA TV and a NAS box ( with all my music/films etc ). Would love to access my NAS box ( which has Twonky ) with my Vega, so I could have watch films all around the house.

To play via twonky, you will need a DLNA player for Android (which I suspect the standard media player isn't). This means you will lose hardware acceleration of decode. The "best" solution will be one that makes remote files look like local ones on the Vega. That way, any windows share can be used as a source. This is what the cifs.ko would allow you to do....
Guest debs626 Posted November 30, 2010 Report Posted November 30, 2010 Debs Do you have any idea if this also works for Windows Media (WMA and WMV) files? Many thanks JB Yikes, my first post. As long as you have a supported player on your device then I cant see why those files wont play. WMA works with the stock audio player but I don't have a player that supports wmv on my Vega to test it yet

I can certainly access the SMB shares on my nas using it on my Desire. Also, I'm sure there was a CIFS app in the Market somewhere...? Should be able to search for it. Does ES file browser present the file to a local application as if it were local? I.e. if you browse to a file and "click" on it, it gets opened in exactly the same way as a local file would?
Guest McSpoon Posted November 30, 2010 Report Posted November 30, 2010 Not sure if this is relevant but there are also some comments in the Tegra repository that implies .wma and .mov streaming are supported by the inbuilt Gallery3D browser. .wma streaming , .mov streaming , SDP protocol, also mentions .avi and .wmv playback But presumably those mime-types are already listed in the Gallery3D.apk AndroidManifest for the Vega.

I'm sure it offers you options based on the file extension.

You're right. On my Desire it just says it is unable to stream the video and then commences to transfer it.
Guest warriorscot Posted November 30, 2010 Report Posted November 30, 2010 I tried the DLNA player app from sourceforge and it will see my windows 7 machines and all the files but it crashes when I attempt to screen anything. So far all I can do is access my files on my home network and transfer them over the network wirelessly which isn't all that slow but until I get my 16gb microSD its more than inconvenient.
Guest arad85 Posted November 30, 2010 Report Posted November 30, 2010 I tried the DLNA player app from sourceforge But that won't be hardware accelerated so will only work for small video files....
