Hey guys.

does anyone know how to get the vega to connected to a home (Windows 7 based) network? Would be cool if I could stream videos from my PC.

Doesn't it involve something call DNLA?

OK I've found a great program to stream music called 2player. I can'y believe just how well it works and it's full screen.

To actually stream video ... i dont think its possible on the vega ... two reasons.. one the wifi on the vega is pitifully slow .. too slow to stream video imo ...other than web based stuff ... secondly there isnt any programs that i have that actually stream ... they all copy the file over first ... thats not streaming.

try twonky it's on the market, I use it with my galaxy tab.

Try Gmote

I've not tested it on my vega but have it on my xperia x10 and it works well. The app gives you an option to play on your device, this function is still in beta but I've not had a problem with it.

You need to install the server program on your target PC

http://www.gmote.org/server

Just checked the site and these are the file formats that are supported :-

mp3, mp4, jpeg

It states that .avi(divx) do not work ...... but they do :P

To stream anything to the device with a server of any description, you need a compatible player. If you are after streaming hi-def video, that means streaming through the supplied player as you'll need the hardware acceleration to play them properly. I don't have a Vega here yet, so can't comment, but I would suspect that it only does file based playing - which would mean some form of SMB sharing would need to be enabled.

with a cifs.ko module, we would be able to mount network shares, browse the files using any file manager on the advent and stream/play media as if it was on the device

I think it works better on the Vega than it does on my Xperia X10 :P

Yes, a cifs.ko would be perfect :P Personally, I think as long as you have a good signal strength, you should be able to stream wirelessly. 720p encodes are normally 4-6Mbits/sec which should be well within the wireless g capabilities...

I tested it for pictures stored on my media server .. it was bloody terrible, every picture looked like it was the 1930's

I share my internet at home thru wifi. 1 desktop, 2 laptops, 2 cellular phones (one Desire), and i intend to buy the vega for me too.

How can i share my external HD (with plenty mp3 files, avi, and working files) thru wifi. What should i buy and use? any sugestions?

Yikes, my first post.

As long as you have a supported player on your device then I cant see why those files wont play.

WMA works with the stock audio player but I don't have a player that supports wmv on my Vega to test it yet

Not sure if this is relevant but there are also some comments in the Tegra repository that implies .wma and .mov streaming are supported by the inbuilt Gallery3D browser.

.wma streaming , .mov streaming , SDP protocol, also mentions .avi and .wmv playback

But presumably those mime-types are already listed in the Gallery3D.apk AndroidManifest for the Vega.

I can't test it right now as I'm at work but I think so yes. I'm sure it offers you options based on the file extension.

this is why we need a cifs module to be compiled for the advent kernel

i can't remember the exact error right now, i'm just going from memory (at work atm.), but it definitely wouldn't just simply stream and play.

You're right.

On my Desire it just says it is unable to stream the video and then commences to transfer it.

I tried the DLNA player app from sourceforge and it will see my windows 7 machines and all the files but it crashes when I attempt to screen anything. So far all I can do is access my files on my home network and transfer them over the network wirelessly which isn't all that slow but until I get my 16gb microSD its more than inconvenient.
