Kernel Source (custom kernel)

I don't suppose anyone has seen the Vega kernel source anywhere yet?

I've compiled up the generic NVidia kernel source from here but the device doesn't boot (using android-tegra-2.6.32 head). :P

Just a thought Paul but the Vega is based off Shuttle's P10AN01 OEM design ... Might be able to find the source code for that instead.

Hi, as someone said before,.. i am a long time listener... and this topic is quite interesting. (btw, im still waiting my vega from pixmania,.. £191,.. hopefully a bargain)

My reply is just to ask Paul if he has tried the git from android kernel for tegra. Seems the kernel is a bit more recent than the stock one. (there are heads for 2.6.34, 2.6.35 and 2.6.36) and last update was few hours ago. Check this URL

No source from Advent yet and the nvidia developers kernel does not boot the Vega when compiled. I have mentioned this a number of time to @AdventVega on twitter.

I'm trying the viewsonic G tab kernel now.

@AdventVega, never let us down yet with news. He has said its on its way.

Lets give them a few days after the break to get things together.

Care to share what you base your suspicion on? My personal view of @adventvega is a pretty well organised outfit (low stock being a small fly in that ointment, but likely that was beyond their control).

I mean literally... i assume they already have the kernel source available it doesnt need to be compiled? could they not have released it the same day as the tablet itself?

They have to make sure that any non-public components are removed. This can include things like the kernel module for the touch screen (depending on which touch screen was used).

There is a lot of opportunity, with kernel source, to add new functionality and hardware support, fix bugs, improve performance etc etc. As an example, several of the custom ROMs for other Tegras already provide native NTFS and CIFs support. Should also be possible to add hardware support for a whole bunch of new devices including USB - think 3G!

I remember the G-tab guys talking about running the Vega kernel, but wi-fi didn't work (which you'd expect at it's a different chipset)

Given that they have kernel source (http://www.viewsonic.com/gtablet/news.htm), couldn't we compile their source to at least get a booting kernel? It that works (without wi-fi) could we not use the GPL Openmoko AR6K driver from here: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/ar6k ? If it boots at all maybe we could diff the gtab source against the nvidia reference and work out what's needed.

Does that seem reasonable to those who've tried compiling kernels?

There is no way to fastboot a kernel without flashing it (as you can on qualcomm chipsets) right? But even is you mis-flash or flash a bad kernel you can still get into bootloader mode and reflash your old kernel (and initrd) I think?

I can't answer your kernel question, but yea you could flash the kernel without any risk of bricking. I've flashed the entire nVidia reference ROM before to see what differences it's bootloader had and if it would boot at all (it doesn't, though the bootloader is nifty), and flashed back to the vega ROM without issue.
