Charged 10p every few minutes

This is a rooted SF, with froyo 2.2 installed and the stock Orange sim still in use.

I noticed my the other day my credit is dropping 10p every few minutes/hours. Basically whenever I switch on the 3G. I've gone through £10 in a mater of days. I updated with £20, converted £5 to a 250mb data package.

However its still choping through 10p sized chunks at random. I don't txt from this phone, or make calls. Its just a toy to do some light surfing from.

Any idea's? Wasn't like this with the stock ROM.

I reverted back to Eclair 2.1 ROM and no additional apps, and still its chomping through 10p's left right and centre. (Edit, wasn't stock it was de-oranged 2.1 with wavesecure I think)

Anyone else had this problem? I check my online bill and all I see is the occasional gprs data, but the cost is 0.00. So what the hell is going on? Is there a bug with the build?

My guess would be to check you're using the right APN to access 3g data.

Ring orange and ask? Sounds like a text message being sent for some reason.

Have a look at this thread and at your online balance - I wonder if your phone may be quietly squirting off texts to Orange or someone

After testing I've found that every time the 3g is switched on its taking 10p.

So what do I need to change on the phone?

Its an Orange sim? The APN is orangeinternet as standard.

What PAYG package are you on with Orange?

Daniel_Owen_uk is right, ring Orange and ask them about this problem. they will be able to tell you exactly what's eating up your credit.

you can avoid getting charged for support call by calling their mobile broadband dongle sales line.

I have the same problem but I'm on Virgin (contract phone) Luckily I get free internet but my bill shows that the phone connects to the internet every 10 or 15 minutes 24 hours a day. I also got a strange warning message when I connected to google (my home page) google asked me to enter a code to check that I wasn't a computer sending SPAM or something like that and a warning that my "computer" was showing unusually high/suspicious usage.

This happens with my phone irrespective of which ROM I use :P I may go back the original stock ROM for a day and check my bill.

Aha.... it seems I've got the 447800003898 txt message problem.... thats where the 10p is going randomly throughout the day. Its annoying but not been a biggie, seeing as the Sim is getting binned pretty much when the t-mobile one arrives.

However I've gone back to the stock 2.1 ROM and ripped off the orangeness in the meantime to test a few things.

All has been ok since 17:59 yesterday when I reimaged with the stock ROM. Last txt message was at 17:59 moments before I re-imaged and nothing since, and no 10p's going out of my account.

Totted up the 447800003898 since I credited the phone, the £5 for a data add-on I can now account for most of the credit used, only 30p is unaccounted for, which could be because Orange site usage history hasn't updated yet.

I have a feeling all this is related to wavesecure, which I could managed to rip off the ROMs. So I'm not blaming the ROM just my inability at pulling wavesecure off.

Anyone got fool proof how to rip wavesecure off instructions? :P

A lot of Mobile providers NAT/Proxy their web traffic rather than assigning each handset an internet routable IP.

It's more likely that Google Is seeing a large amount of traffic from a small Ip range because of this and it's not actually something that you/your phone is causing.

I dunno man, thats not exactly constructive.... I did try to un-install the apk, and it fails, presumably because is packaged with the ROM.

From what I gather you unzip the ROM and find the apk? delete and is that it? Is the apk actually called wavesecure.apk? So many apk's with difficult to fathom names.

com.wsandroid.apk in the system/app folder.

Just extract the zip, remove this file and then rezip it.

Titanium backup will let you just uninstall it if you don't want to reflash...

Deleting /system/app/com.ws.android.apk with root explorer (assuming you've rooted your phone) will also get rid of it.

Excellent, ta!

I'll maybe reflash with froyo soon then once the guys have worked a solution to the touch screen freezing up. Missing my apps2sd support though.... :P

Deleting with Titanium Backup and Root Explorer will work but it leaves behind settings. You will also find that these apps now appear with 0kb is your Settings - Applications after doing it your way and clicking on them will crash it.

Whats the value of wavesecure anyway? Is it a tracking app? How does it set itself up? I'm guessing its a 2 factor setup, because it only sent out a txt when the data connection bacame active, and i was switching it on/off throughout the days which could explain why it was txting so often.

Does it contact the wavesecure server over the internet and via txt to authenticate?

have you pulled the battery or powered off during this time? my phone will do it on demand every time the device is rebooted this is both with the stockrom and a custom rom.

This text is definatley due to WaveSecure, I never used it, but it is included in the rom I'm using.

There is always a Wavesecure logo in my notifications telling me that I should register. The last notification on the phone from wavesecure is at exactly the same time as the last text message to 447800003898 on my online orange bill.

I'll be removing that then...

Funny you should say that, but my phone just froze up, i pulled the battery and what do you know, balance down 10p!

Is that Orange being a bunch of robbers? I've never heard such rubbish before... send a txt when a phone has its battery pulled!

Sooner I stick a t-mobile internet only sim the better lol

I fixed this by deleting messages from Orange, some sort of status update glitch. Have a look in your messages list, probably see one with the time as shown in your usage history being sent to Orange. Delete the messages, restart and hopefully you won't see it again.
