Guest Petrolhead Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 Having just got the San Fransisco I have already got desired to flash it to get rid of the Orange look I am new to this though, I have installed the latest Clockwork but what next, is it a simple case of downloading the flash image and saving to the smemory card and then re-booting the phone? Should I use the flash available on this site and if I do will I loose the TouchPal? Will the ROM improve the feel of the phone ie flicking through the screen etc Are there other ROM out there? I feel sure that as soon as I flash the phone I will end up having a hundred questions :P
Guest Sandy mk1 Posted December 2, 2010 Report Posted December 2, 2010 I've tried a couple of the Froyo roms, i get frustrated though at the odd problem. Fortunately I bought the phone to play with not as a 1st phone so its not a deal breaker. Most common is my Orange sim seems to be depleting its credit at an alarming rate, no biggie as I'm putting a t-mobile sim in for data only. And the other problem I've encountered and I believe this one is related to the builds is the screen stopping responding. It will light but no touch functionality meaning you have to reboot, which involved a battery pull as the screen isn't working. Other than that its quite good fun playing around with the roms so long as its not your main phone I'd say. I've currently gone back to the old Orange 2.1 rom but ripped off most of the orange crap, just wish their was an App2SD for it. Great forum, and plenty of activity too. For all the ROM creators out there, keep up the good work. :P

I feel sure that as soon as I flash the phone I will end up having a hundred questions :P To keep touchpal, get a copy of the original apk file from apps folder in the Orange build. Save it in your SD card and from your phone's Filer program you just open it and it will install flawlessly (edit: you have to select option in settings to allow installation from Unknown Sources. Settings - Applications.) When you flash into a different ROM again, the apk file will still be in the SD card so you can load it again into the new ROM. Froyo's performance has been amazing in terms of speed and general feel. It's like running Google Chrome vs Internet Explorer, its just so much snappier. However, some ROMs here still have issues such as GPS might throw you off to Yorkshire (Flibblesan ROM) for a few minutes but take you to the right spot eventually. I think this is because the GPS had to be "fixed" in terms of build from the first Chinese ROM. I've used it a few times and it's been OK. The problem though is when data throughput is low from network, you will get stuck in Yorkshire. Other ROMs have their own quirks but I've been using mine as primary phone and have been really happy so far. When you said flashing by "rebooting" the phone - follow the how to's here: Essentially it's: 1. Copy ROM of choice in the SD Card 2. Boot in Clockwork (hold down volume down key while powering up) 3. Select clear data 4. Select clear cache 5. Select the ROM to Install when it says its finished go back the menu and select Reboot or Restart Good luck and have fun. Edited December 2, 2010 by lixcab
Guest Petrolhead Posted December 2, 2010 Report Posted December 2, 2010 (edited) I thought the jury was out re putting Android 2.2 of the San Fran hang on, the ROM that Paul has, is that based on Android 2.1 or 2.2? Edited December 2, 2010 by Petrolhead
Guest Sandy mk1 Posted December 2, 2010 Report Posted December 2, 2010 I thought the jury was out re putting Android 2.2 of the San Fran hang on, the ROM that Paul has, is that based on Android 2.1 or 2.2? Just to make maters clear, i'm not bad mouthing the froyo ROMs, i'm just saying they are great if you don't mind a little bit of inconvenience or don't mind re-flashing. If its 1st phone that your gonna want to use every day I'd personally stick with 2.1 or a custom 2.1 ROM which is more stable. Only thing that put me off Froyo roms was the touch screen freezing up daily, once thats sorted then i'll be back a flashing! :D Its a great community this, i've not had to ask may questions as there is so much valuable info here if your willing to read through the topics. Also if you get stuck there are loads of experts who'll lend a hand. :P
