Help overclock and flashing black quarx rom

Firstly i would like to ask how to upgrade the kernel on the gt540. I am on a official 2.1 firmware, not a flashed one. i used the lg mobile update tool. I know that it requires fastboot but i cant seem to get into that mode. I am really unsure on the entire process after reading the threads on the forum as i am afraid i will brick my phone. Also when i try to flash clockworkrecovery mod on my phone using kdz updater the program does not respond for at all. Apps2sd is also a problem as i cant seem to get it working after following all the steps in the forum. Please help as i would really like to flash the quarx rom, have apps2sd and overclock
