Guest habrahabr Posted December 6, 2010 Report Posted December 6, 2010 What ROM is the best for battery life? I prefer LCR, but i havent used CM and Metal roms. Is it better?
Guest gi4257 Posted December 6, 2010 Report Posted December 6, 2010 What ROM is the best for battery life? I prefer LCR, but i havent used CM and Metal roms. Is it better? I think it really depends on what you're doing with you phone : 2G, 3G, Wifi, GPS,Web, Games ... AFAIC, I didn't notice much difference between Roms : I used 2G only, Wifi and bluetooth and it always stands around 2 days (Leak and Stock Rom 2.1, 2.2. I never tried LCR during many days)
Guest fear_factory84 Posted December 6, 2010 Report Posted December 6, 2010 lcr-f 1.1.x on 4.504b leak is good on battery as long as you don't enable proximity sensors and light sensors. I'm managing to flash to the latest release and try the metal rom on top of it. I'll tell you in the next weeks how battery is..

Guest jayziac Posted December 6, 2010 Report Posted December 6, 2010 I usually don't use light sensors. But whats the connection between battery life and the proximity sensor? Regards, Andi There was a reported bug where the proximity sensor is left on even when the phone is idle, draining the battery. So turning it off makes sure it's never draining. Not sure if the bug is still there (I have mine turned off in latest ROMs anyway).
Guest thenext1 Posted December 6, 2010 Report Posted December 6, 2010 There was a reported bug where the proximity sensor is left on even when the phone is idle, draining the battery. So turning it off makes sure it's never draining. Not sure if the bug is still there (I have mine turned off in latest ROMs anyway). That 'bug' is still there, that is, if you leave the proximity sensor enabled, "Android System" will take up much of your phone usage - as reported in settings > phone info > battery usage - but I don't know how this is related to battery life. Battery life has always been dodgy for me with the liquid. With the latest froyo rom, the 3G data sucks battery like crazy, 1 hour of fiddling and the battery will go from full to just above midway.
Guest astuermer Posted December 6, 2010 Report Posted December 6, 2010 Hmm, 3G sucks really... the battery... got the 4.5xx leak.
Guest magritte Posted December 6, 2010 Report Posted December 6, 2010 Hmm, 3G sucks really... the battery... got the 4.5xx leak. I don't have a data plan and just use my Liquid E for voice and data over WiFi. Is 3G for voice any better or worse for battery? Is there any advantage to using 3G for reception or sound quality?

If you disable the proximity sensor, doesn't your face press the onscreen buttons?
Guest Thmz159 Posted December 6, 2010 Report Posted December 6, 2010 If you disable the proximity sensor, doesn't your face press the onscreen buttons? I think you can just turn the screen off using the power button. But btw; how can I disable proximity sensor? Is it in the options?

Is there any advantage to using 3G for reception or sound quality? I believe 3G uses more battery power than 2G for data. Voice calls & SMS doesn't matter. it only affects data. If you disable the proximity sensor, doesn't your face press the onscreen buttons? I'm careful to press only the upper edge of the phone against my ear and tilt the lower half away, or both away for less radiation, it auto-dims after 1 min anyway. I think you can just turn the screen off using the power button. But btw; how can I disable proximity sensor? Is it in the options? It's in Settings -> Call Settings -> Advanced Settings -> Set P-sensor sensitivity

Is there any advantage to using 3G for reception or sound quality? The codec used in 3G is different, but I don't notice any difference. I can't use only 2G though, or else my carrier (h3g italy) will notice and change my plan. If you disable the proximity sensor, doesn't your face press the onscreen buttons? Sure, but I hit the power button after placing a call or answering to one, so the screen goes off (same effect of the p-sensor, in fact). I believe 3G uses more battery power than 2G for data. Voice calls & SMS doesn't matter. it only affects data. You are probably right, but with 2G speeds, your phone would be busy longer than with 3G speeds... so I think, from this standpoint, that 2G uses roughly the same amount of power.

I remember searching for this a while back also and a blogger tested iphone 2G and 3G and recorded 2G lasting longer, even though theoretically it should take less time to download the same amount of data on 3G and the radio should go idle sooner, but that's not what happens in the real world. I think it also concluded that wifi uses less power and faster data transaction than 3G. Cell phone specs usually quote 2G talk and standby longer than 3G.

Wifi uses less power, and I think it's because the operation range is so restricted that this saving makes up for the extra power requirement due to the increased signalling rate (54+ mbps versus 7.2+). In 3G, with less-than-perfect signal, the phone becomes really warm. As for the battery, I don't remember where - most probably a Motorola phone spec sheet - but I saw a longer 3G call time compared to 2G. VIceversa, idle time was longer for 2G.
Guest habrahabr Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 guys, im asking for a ROM with best battery life
Guest astuermer Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 (edited) guys, im asking for a ROM with best battery life Hehe ;) A bit off topic... Regarding your question: I personally prefer the Froyo Leak named "4.504b.00_EMEA-GEN1_05.01.05". I rooted it, deleted all unnecessary apps, did a factory reset and wipe. 1. Very stable - no self-reboot or so since weeks. 2. Very good battery life - in comparison to the latest 4.002.14 leak where battery life is poorer for me. Currently my battery is @ 76 percent. Took it from charger today at 6 in the morning. Hourly mailsync, Facebook and Twitter gets synced every 2 hours via TweetDeck. 20 minutes telephony, 3 SMS and a few photos taken with Camera360 today. 3. Fast - I've got a mix of the AcerUI and ADW Launcher. Edited December 7, 2010 by astuermer
Guest split2th Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 (edited) I don't have a data plan and just use my Liquid E for voice and data over WiFi. Is 3G for voice any better or worse for battery? Is there any advantage to using 3G for reception or sound quality? This is actually how it works. 2G and 3G have the same battery drain while idling. 3G has better battery drain for data, because it downloads what it needs faster than goes back to idle. 2G will give you double the talk time over 3G, and you will still get sms, for me I'll even get data(Edge). Wifi is the best battery drain for data. So, normal for me is 2G(which is great because I'll still get my email notifications). When I want to do some data intensive stuff at home I turn on wifi. And for data while I'm out I turn on 3G. Using any phone in this way will get you the best battery drain. actually no, having wifi and 2G on at the same time will most likely drain more battery than having only 3G on. However I only have 1GB data plan so wifi is a must. PS. Lol just read the last few comments. Yup a little off topic. I'm using the latest bin 4.002.14, with official fido rom. I highly recommend this, or the rogers lite(I've never tried but should be the same). Completely stable, fast, and excellent battery drain. Edited December 7, 2010 by split2th
Guest habrahabr Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 Regarding your question: lol, i have the same - 4.504 is better for battery life) now im trying Cyanogen. not bad, i can say. and i havent done an wipe battery
Guest Charlton22 Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 If I leave the Wifi Or Data always switched on, will they drain the battery faster? Currently I switch on/off wifi/data every time I need to used them. But how it will consumes of I leave them on standby?
Guest jayziac Posted December 9, 2010 Report Posted December 9, 2010 If I leave the Wifi Or Data always switched on, will they drain the battery faster? Currently I switch on/off wifi/data every time I need to used them. But how it will consumes of I leave them on standby? That depends what apps you have installed. Some apps will continue to try to get data in the background even if they don't seem to, so unless you run a pretty clean install, likely there are apps that still work in the background. To be sure, just turn off all data (are apps such as quick settings and power bar widget that make this easier). I even noticed setting background data to on allows Google Market to check regularly for any app updates (even if I don't have any apps that have 'automatic update' turned on. It's a minor drain (like extra 1% per hour of idling).
Guest astuermer Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 If I leave the Wifi Or Data always switched on, will they drain the battery faster? Currently I switch on/off wifi/data every time I need to used them. But how it will consumes of I leave them on standby? Until last monday I had 3G always ON - with hourly mailsync and Twitter/Facebook sync every 2 hours. I had battery drain of 1-2 percent per hour. With usual usage of a few SMS a day, 30 minutes of calls a day the battery lasts a maximum of 2 days. On monday I turned of 3G via SwitchPro Widget from the Market. I only turn it on if I need it (because most of the time I am in the office with internet access - or at home with internet over iPad). So there's no "real" need of permanent internet connection for me. Battery drain of 2-3 percent during 7-8 hours of sleep :) Now the battery lasts 4 days with same as above (except mail and Twitter/Facebook sync). (Currently I am on 4.504b.00 with AcerUI and ADW Launcher on top)
Guest Morris Lee Posted December 17, 2010 Report Posted December 17, 2010 Canada cell phone service sucks, I can't use 2G as they never went to 2g here, they went from cdma to 3g, I am stuck on 3g only, :) if I switch to 2g, I don't even get voice, no reception!! Noo!!

Noo!! Really? That's weird. After reading your post, I switched my phone from automatic to 2G only, and everything works for me! I placed a test call, it went through just fine! And I'm surfing modaco in 2G. I don't understand why it doesn't work for you! I see you're in Edmonton. I'm smack dab in the middle of Vancouver Island nestled in between 2 mountain ranges (far from any major city). My carrier is Rogers, and I gotta say, my cell phone service is awesome. Too bad it doesn't work for you!
Guest petoulachi Posted December 17, 2010 Report Posted December 17, 2010 (edited) I have 4.002.14.EMEA and Metal Liquid 2.5 and I have to say that it's the best battery life I've ever had : -no GPS/Wifi/Bluetooth ever -3G on, gmail sync, exchange sync (via Touchdown), no facebook sync (i do it manually) My phone can last 3days in standby, it's very good. Using it normally it last 2 days approx. Oh, and I use proximity sensor aswell Edited December 17, 2010 by petoulachi
