Android 2.1 upgrade solution

It seems that loads of people are having problem upgrading to 2.1 and LG UK is blaming the mobile networks. When I try to upgrade using LG tool through my WIFI I get a message saying that phone is already upgraded but it ain't, it is still 1.6 10A. I downloading it on WIFI not on 3, should network matter? I bought a phone from Carphone Warehouse SIM free and I'm using 3 mobile SIM. Has anybody out there sucessfuly upgraded and running 2.1 on 3 mobile UK?
