Hi guys just an update on whether oled is being faised out on these great phones

my mum bought 2 orange san fransico's both in black today from orange uk shop for my aunt and sister

Anyway I was in the middle of setting them up for christmas and come to the realisation that the screens are tft not oled, I know this because I compared it with my other sisters san fransico and the white on the oled is pinkish while the tft is proper white

So I guess thats the end or possible end of oled ;)

I was going to get it as well just because it had the oled

Oh and I trust it has the same ram as the oled version

Yeah that's right. Same screen resolution, better touchscreen and no pentile matrix so the text and icons should be sharper.

Yea I guess its nothing to be worried over when it comes to my family as im the only one who is tech savvy

I would have prefered to have an oled version because images and things look much more vivid

oh well guess im going to have to reconsider

What about the ram, I would check but ive packed it away and dont want to deal with the hassle with packaging

Technically, yes, but i've compared the tft with the oled version and the oled is much better color reproduction and the text seems just as sharp.

Plus, power consumption is miles better with oled anyway

Better touch screen? how so?

AFAIK, the new TFT versions got a new, better touchpad over the OLED screen!

Hopefully I have decided to stop chasing the AMOLED ones

I hope to see some of the €76 Swiss ones up on eBay soon ;)

Woot shadow, you here? :P

I suggest you to buy such a phone, switching from a G1 got the feel of a real kick :P

From the 5800, the G1 was great, from the G1, the Blade is great... I can't imagine the feeling of a switch from an 5800 to a Galaxy S ;)

I am everywhere mate

The AMOLED is too coveted on eBay, huge profits for sellers ;) cant afford that

As for speed, my friend is running CM6 on his Wildfire

I hope its as fast as his!

Source? I've recently been messing with the touchscreen driver in the kernel and I'd really like to know if the TFT blades uses a different touchscreen (and possibly a different driver)

What I know for a fact is that the touchscreen driver in the released kernel source differs quite a lot between the first version we got and the latest version (20101123). The first touchscreen driver reported the actual pressure to android from 0 to 255 and I suppose the OSF might have used this driver. The later version of the touchscreen driver always report the highest pressure (255) regardless of the real pressure so it is possible that the newer kernels "feels" more responsive. Just a theory...

Why and how should the touchscreen be any better on the TFTs? On the OLED the touch was perfekt. What comes after perfekt?

I think Kalter Kaffee is right. It will has something to do with the drivers, not with the Screen itself.

OLED phones used Synaptics touch controllers. The LCD phones use another type which, so far, I've not been able to find out.

I don't know exactly what the LCD screen is but the OLED is a Samsung.

If you mean a screen with weird dots, the first generation Hungarian Blade uses the same. The new generation (what has fixed the screen over-voltage) has a new type of touch-screen (mine is first gen, my father just bought one, it is second gen, mine has weird dot grid on the panel, my father's has no such) is some kind of new screen, what supposedly won't report touch pressure.

Don't quote me on this but I don't exactly have lots of love for Synaptics controllers (from my use of laptop touchpads no less, irrelevant as that may be), so I'll presume that the TFT's solution is a step up from 1st gen.

If this is the only difference and if it does improve the touch response is it possible to tweak the 1st gen driver to do the same?

Could you test that multitouch program on the 2nd gen screen shown here

does it do the same? then we'll see if it really is better

SF OLED has more vivid colors and an incredible blacks and in terms of resolution and sharpnes, hand by hand, I do not see too much different with the SF TFT.

But I have some practical information about the touchscreen: Snnce I got the grey SF it has been tricky to move one shortcut from one home screen to the next one (pushing and sliding the icon). But with the white SF first touch and it never fails. Maybe are my phones or just by chance ...test yours ;)
