When I set an image to my background thats 1024x600, it never fits the background correctly, it shrinks it down. Is there any way to get around this?

Cheers

Use a wallpaper of 1024x1200 due to Android's '2x horizontal resolution by 1x vertical resolution' requirement.

Contrary to what some users have said on this subject (including lnux9898, above), Vega wallpapers should be 1024x600. I can say from experience that this is the correct resolution for wallpapers, and pictures 1024x600 in size will display perfectly (with the top hidden behind the notification bar, of course).

Don't forget that you need to re-size the orange selection box to fit the picture when selecting your wallpaper.

Did you put them in the VegaMedia > Photos folder?
