Guest TheScrub Posted December 9, 2010 Report Posted December 9, 2010 Hi All, My gfs replacement SF has just turned up (faulty back button) and I want to get it rooted and a new rom on there as it was before. How can I tell if it's got an OLED or TFT screen?
Guest Richard_Arkless Posted December 9, 2010 Report Posted December 9, 2010 Hi All, My gfs replacement SF has just turned up (faulty back button) and I want to get it rooted and a new rom on there as it was before. How can I tell if it's got an OLED or TFT screen? Oled is where the whites aint proper whites and more pinkish tft is proper whites
Guest TheScrub Posted December 9, 2010 Report Posted December 9, 2010 Thank for the reply ;) I can't quite tell with white as there's not many patches of whitespace for my eyes to focus on. There is however a noticeable pinkish hue with greys, as with my original Desire so I think it's safe to assume I have me an OLED! Cheers

Cheers If you honestly can't tell then why does it matter :P If you were to find out that you don't have an OLED you would only be disappointed
Guest abdidas Posted December 9, 2010 Report Posted December 9, 2010 (edited) Install the stock orange ROM the B05 one and if you get normal colours than you have OLED if you get blue tint or strange colours then you have TFT. Edited December 9, 2010 by abdidas
Guest Simon O Posted December 9, 2010 Report Posted December 9, 2010 Sit in a dark room and turn the phone on. If you can see a backlight then it's TFT. On OLED when the screen is black you won't see anything at all. Black background will light up with a TFT screen.
Guest Stuart_f Posted December 9, 2010 Report Posted December 9, 2010 I think their may be an easier visual method that doesn't even need the phone turned on. On the OLED version the black screen surround (the bit with San Francisco printed on it) has a small rounding at the corners where the surround meets the screen. On the TFT version the corners are perfectly square. You might have to see both in order to work out the difference. I'll see if I can find a camera to take a pic of the differences.

Would be brilliant if you could. Picking one up over the weekend and it would be nice to know exactly which one I'm getting. Looking through this forum, some ROMs don't work with the TFT version. Any idea if they will support them in the future as the TFT's gain in numbers?
Guest Stuart_f Posted December 9, 2010 Report Posted December 9, 2010 Still working on a real photo. I only have the cameras on the phones to take pictures and you can't make it out clearly enough so here's a drawing to explain the difference based on Paul's review photo. The differences are really is quite subtle. Apologies for it looking like a 3-year old's attempt to get on one of Tony Hart's show.
Guest Nikban1 Posted December 9, 2010 Report Posted December 9, 2010 The one at the bottom is the white model with the TFT and the on at the top the grey model with the oled. The colours on the oled are stronger the brightness is set actually lower on the top one even though its stronger/brighter. Excuse the rubbish pics taken with the crap cam on my iphone 3gs :) . There is a difference side by side but on its own the TFT on the white is still a good screen.

Guest zuti Posted December 9, 2010 Report Posted December 9, 2010 Nikban1: would you be so kind and let me know if you noticed any battery differences between LED White SF and your OLED Gray one? This is the only point that I am worried a bit as I in general don't care about OLED vs LED thing. But if the LED one suffers in the battery department because of it, hopefully it's not. Cheers!

Not able to give a comparison on battery at the moment i bought 2 white and 1 grey. the wife is using one of the white ones at the moment but the other white and the grey are for the kids for christmas i was just setting them up today on a day off before the kids got in from school. I beleive that the tft screen is supposed to use more battery due to the back light, but what i will say is that although the colours are not as bold on the tft they are crisper and it is still a good screen. The ones in the pic are set with the brightness turned down lower on the grey model than the white and it is still brighter. To be honest i dont think it matters which screen you get regarding battery you will still need to put it on charge every night :) . I have an iphone 3gs that doesn't get that much hammer and at best i can get 2 days but its a risk on the second day so i am used to putting on charge every night, i just give it a complete flat every couple of weeks to give it a full charge. It was a shock for the missus having to charge it every night after her nokia that would last weeks but i explained she didnt have the nokia in her hand every minuet facebooking, twitter, downloading apps and playing games :) . Guest theInquisitor Posted December 9, 2010 Report Posted December 9, 2010 (edited) After having bought some TFT-equipped Swiss OSFs I received two British OLED ones today, so I could make the attached photos for comparison. With a magnifying glass you can recognize an OLED display by the staggered arrangement of the pixel lines, while on TFT displays lines are aligend rectangularly. With the naked eye you'll notice the backlight behind black areas, which remains absolutely dark on OLED. The TFT display is a bit brighter, but colour fidelity is worse. While TFT has a strong bluish cast, colours appear much more natural and vivid on OLED. The OLED also seems to have a broader range of colours, which you can see on the photo of the lock screen, whose background is dominated by black on the TFT, as it can't display all the nuances which the OLED displays. However the TFT is sharper - especially text loses sharpness due to the staggered pixel arrangement. As an example for this effect have a look at the edges of the icons on the close-up photo: While the edges of the icons are straight on the TFT, edges on the OLED are in a zigzag-pattern. Anyway, the difference in sharpness is nearly indiscernible from the distance and negligible in everyday life. But on the other hand viewing angles are better on the OLED, as colours are distorted much later and less than on TFT. The only thing untested so far is readability under direct sunlight, where I expect the TFT to perform better. Edited December 9, 2010 by theInquisitor

You should probably make a thread with this post as the first post, help some noobs :)
Guest 90180360 Posted December 9, 2010 Report Posted December 9, 2010 Finally a useful comparison, thanks! Would definitely prefer OLED....
Guest Stuart_f Posted December 9, 2010 Report Posted December 9, 2010 Mine look square and it's definitely an OLED so.. My sample size is 2 so I could well be wrong but it would seem odd to change the front cover mid batch....

Guest flatnote31 Posted December 14, 2010 Report Posted December 14, 2010 (edited) Just in case anyone insists that B08/Grey is LCD....I can certainly confirm that it isn't! It can be either LCD or OLED Check Other Post Edited December 14, 2010 by flatnote31
