Problems with making/receiving calls - radio issue?

I hope someone can help me with this issue, it's driving me crazy.....

I got my HTC Desire Black when they were first released on Orange. It's a great phone but I've been having problems with it which are now getting very frustrating and I'm not sure if the phone is the issue or the Orange network is (was previously on O2).

For as long as I can remember, I've had intermittent problems making/receiving phone calls and texts. I put it down to where I sit in the office as generally the problem occurs when I'm at work although I've now experienced it outside of the office. Putting the phone into plane mode, leaving it a few seconds, then taking it our of plane mode sorts it out, I assume because it turns the radio off then back on? Occasionally I do this randomly as I never know when the problem has occurred until I get an angry text from my other half telling me she can't get through and to sort my phone out! This morning, I put the phone into plane mode, then out again as usual. Straight away I had a message saying the text was unable to be sent. I hadn't sent any texts! This message kept coming up and it appeared to be trying to send a text that I actually sent several weeks ago. The person it was going to received it from me today 7 times! I then got a text from a family member replying to a text that I sent them 3 weeks ago, they'd only just got it. A short while later I got a text from my wife answering a text that I sent her on Monday (I have sent and received texts from her since then). I've just been checking through my text messages and in both cases of today's delayed text, I'd received replies from both people (and sent and received other texts to/from them) when the texts where originally sent several weeks ago. Why on earth would it pick those ones to resend?

This is the first time I've had delayed sent texts, but I get the "unable to send text" message every now and then, and I know that the person receives more than 1 copy.

This has been happening for a while. About 6 weeks ago I rooted it and put on a Modoco custom 2.2 ROM (including a new Radio version: 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2) hoping that would sort it but it hasn't. I do get poor reception from Orange (compared to O2) and the speed of 3G is very poor. The phone will usually display good signal strength for phone and 3G but I never know when it's correct as both 3G speed is very slow and the phone might not be receiving calls (not necessarily at the same time).

Is there a later better radio ROM that would be worth trying?

Is there a stock Orange ROM that I could install so I could get it replaced?

Any thoughts/suggestions/questions/options for me, please??
