Number of Vegas in the wild

For what it's worth...

Based on the serial numbers people have been posting ("What's Your Serial?"), I've had a go at estimating the number of Vegas out there. I've used a trick that the Brits used to estimate German tank production during WWII (see link for more info).

I've entered all the serial numbers reported so far into a Google spreadsheet and did the maths. This is the result so far:

  • Batch 1 (out of interest): 163
  • Total: 919

The estimate becomes more accurate the more data points there are. The spreadsheet is editable, so do add more serial numbers to it (insert batch 1 SNs into the yellow section, and add the others to the bottom of the list).

Cheers!

Not being funny ... but seriously does it matter??

You know that you could probably have just contacted advent and asked them you could even pm them on the site.

Good on you for doing this.

And yes, I think it does matter as I find it interesting to compare the sales figures to other similar devices.

Advent were asked, but don't give out commercially sensitive information, (of course!).

It does indeed matter, as it allows us to estimate how many they are able to make in a week, compare with backlog, and deduce that there aint a snowballs chance in hell that they'll be in shops for Xmas as previously promised by Advent & DSG.

Which means I'll be F5'ing again next week to try and snag one when they come back on sale!

nice one - I think it matters too, it's good to know if demand is genuinely high or if they are just creating that impression by hardly releasing any stock.

the more units out there the better the online community modding and supporting other users will become.

May be a way of validating your figures is to quantify the number of members who subscribe to this particular forum. I expect most savvi Vega owners or wannabes would have found this place by now and recognise it as the font of all knowledge Vega :) Once you have that figure it is a question of calculating the number of actual owners which might be accomplished easily by us all putting a flag in one of the personal profile fields we don't use currently e.g. Analytics field to say YES or NO as to whether we have received our Vega yet. Then posting a sticky to say please update this field so everyone does it accordingly?

Then it would be down to Paul or admin to pull off the data for analysis. It would be interesting to know the number of owners and potentials that Advent have.

Absolutely not. Was just curious, and thought I'd share, that's all.

By the way, this is how analysts estimate the size of a market (one of the ways). Here's another example: two months after the launch of the iPhone, it was estimated this way that Apple had made about 9m phones, based on just 150 collected serial numbers (ref).

I agree with trevor432990 that it would also be interesting to know how many people subscribe to this forum and compare the numbers.

Hmm, the problem I see is that for every subscriber who has registered there is probably several more who are hoovering up the content but see no need to register as they do not want to post.

Yes probably would need to make an estimate on those I guess

Plus those of us that are interested in the device, but haven't got one yet.

And although it doesn't matter too much, it would be interesting to know none the less as it would give you an idea as to how much Advent will invest in the Vega - accessories etc. Yes they've done some of the basics already, but they can do more yet, but would probably only consider it if the numbers look good.

Sob - I'm getting vouchers for Christmas (family seem to feel a voucher is a real present but money is not)

If they don't hurry up and get these in the ships then surely all the competition will start flooding in.

I really thought they would have upped production by now. Booooo
