Alert Sounds on Desire

I am running Paul's R8 on a HTC Desire and something has annoyed me for some time. I cannot find any way to have separate alerts/no alerts for the different messaging. I need to be alerted if sms messages are received but do not want alerts for either exchange mail or my google mail. There does not seem to be anyway to separately configure sounds so that I can turn them off for emails and still be alerted for sms messages. Oh and I still want to be alerted for appointments.

Is this just me overlooking something obvious or is it a design flaw of phone. My work phone (Blackberry Bold) allows me to have separate sounds and levels of sound for exchange, sms,pp3 and appointments
