Buying a used Pulse

A friend is selling me a T Mobile Pulse for pretty cheap, I just have a few questions. It has 2.1 loaded.

Does pulse run Andoid 2.2 properly? And is it powerful enough to support 2.3?

There is no official Android 2.2 for pulse. You can find a port of CyanogenMod 6.1 in this forum, that is based on 2.2. It runs smoothly, and there are only a very few bugs, it is excellent for everyday use (much better than the official 2.1).

Theoretically it is powerful enough to run 2.3 (since the requirements did not change), but there is only an alpha port of this OS so far. It boots, and a few features work, but currently it is a techdemo that shows that it could work.

The current officially supported Android OS version is 2.1.

Depending on how cheap it is and which phone you use now I'd say buy it.

The cyanogenmod port is very good and it's way better than other budget android phones like htc tattoo or wildfire.

I use Cyanogen mod on my pulse, which is based on 2.2 froyo, so my oppinion is yes, it can run 2.2 properly.

I'm getting a 4 month old Pulse for an equivalent of around 180 dollars unlocked, which considering a 3.5 inch screen, android, etc is a dream for me.

My only worry is that it's warranty of course will not be valid here in my country. So I don't know whether to trust the eBay guy or not. Tricky decision to make :S

Well, 180 USD for this phone is not cheap to tell the truth. It is a rational price if the phone is in excellent condition.

(I purchased my own pulse in may from T-mo for about $220-230, with pre-paid contract, and the turbo sim costed about $8 more. But since that the phone is not even manufactured afaik)

If i were you i'd buy a zte blade, if you are thinking about a low-end android phone. In my country, in Hungary it costs currently $170-180 with a pre-paid contract, and it is much better than the Pulse.

I have a T-Mobile Pulse and it is running the Cyanogen 6.1 port (based on Android 2.2.1). This runs better than both the official 2.1 update and the other 2.1 ROMs. I'm hoping Android 2.3 gets ported to this great little phone too.

And is HTC Sense possible on this phone?

I'm a bit skeptical about the processor and ram. Just 192mb ram if I'm right. And 500mhz or so processor. Good enough?

It's not possible to run HTC Sense on this phone: only HTC phones support it.

SWAP compensates for the relatively low RAM and the processor can be overclocked to the (stable) max of 729MHz. Most of use use either 710MHz or 691MHz.

Okay alright.

One last thing. The guy sent me some pics of the phone. In that, it has HUAWEI written on the phone's back panel, instead of T MOBILE as in all other pics I've seen. It does have T Mobile written on the front at the top though.

Is this a general variation; or is there something fishy about the phone.

EDIT: Also, are there a good number of apps available for this HVGA resolution? As far as I knew, this is kind of an odd resolution for an andoid phone no?

That must be because the battery cover is generic instead of T-Mobile-branded.

HGVA (480x320) is very common. It's probably the second most common resolution, being the most common 800x480.

I don't remember a single app not working with this resolution, and I've installed hundreds of apps & games.

That's the joy of the Android Market: one app works on all (well, almost all :)) phones.

yeah whatever, but nobody can pretend that you pay more then 100$ for a used pulse... i mean the phone is really good cause with overclocked kernel to 748 (working just fine for me) and cyanogenmod i'm really happy, but the orange san francisco hardware is better and it's also cheap...

well you must make the choice

I live in India right now.

What do you guys think about the Optimus one? Smaller screen, but almost the same otherwise. More RAM too. And comes with 2.2.

Sorry, but the Pulse for 180$... it could only be a joke, i buyed a used Pulse 2 Weeks ago and only payed 75€ inclusive shipment. 180$ is about 135€ and this is the price for the ZTE Blade... so... no don't buy it. Yes 2.2 is running smoothly not smooth on the phone but only with tricks like overclocking an Swap. If 2.3 will ever run on this phone is written in the stars.

For 75€ (100$) it is a good alternativ. So if you can get it for this price you should buy it. For me it is not worth more, because with the ZTE Blade (orange San Francisco) there is a much better alternative Phone available for not much more money...

For this price you should be able to get a used HTC My touch 3G or something else.

Sure I will, but again, here, phones are pretty expensive. And Mytouch isn't available here. ZTE Blade looks great for that price and those specs, but importing it to here will raise it's cost another $50 and there won't be any warranty either.
