Battery status gone odd

I went to awake my phone and found it off rather than asleep. So I powered up and it said it was at 0 battery it was powering down. I don't know how that happened because last night it was like 60 percent charged.

Anyway so I'm USB charging it now and the battery status is not giving the charged animation, it' just a red sliver at the bottom of the icon with a lightning bolt, but when you go into Settings:>Phone:>Battery status is it slowly going up.

First I'm not sure what's happened here, and how it flattened itself. Which makes me wonder if it actually was flat.

I thought yesterday it turned itself off when it should have been asleep.

I've been taking the SIM in and out between another phone to grab contacts and some SMSs to put on the SF. One time I forgot it was actually on (asleep) and took the battery and SIM out, could that have caused it to go weird ?

Also I did the sneaky Google Account set up via the YouTube app yesterday I think it was. And the phone seemed to hang, so I powered it down and rebooted. Perhaps it hadn't hung.

Anyway any thoughts ?

EDIT: just noticed last bunch of SMSs i put on SIM from other phone are completely garbled.
