I find the audio quality very good, though it can make a few interference noises occasionally. The volume is a bit low, but with some noise isolation earphone it's fine.
Guest crazyfool_1 Posted December 13, 2010 Report Posted December 13, 2010 most of my top apps have been named except trillian best im app i've found which I use for msn and fb chat also seven, its an email app in beta and you have to register on their forums to dl it but its worth it, multiple inboxes, nice ui, haven't had any issues with it and i believe it was on pauls app of the day at some point
Guest cartierv Posted December 14, 2010 Report Posted December 14, 2010 (edited) Frankly coming from an iPhone, you may well find a lot of the apps in the Market ranging from disappointing to mind-boggling sad nonsense. There's a reason Apple steer devs to use the system GUI that they have put a massive effort of design and R&D into, not encourage devs to create some big steaming pile of crap because 9 times out of 10 it's not gonna work. I mean take an applicaiton like Advanced Task Killer which is very popular. Ironic that an application designed to speed up your system has got a stupid slow ass ugly interface itself. Another example. I was desperately looking for a good painting app. I went through loads. And guess what ? Every single one, without fail is garbage. Just childish sad garbage that someone's done as a hobby and stuck up there. The closest out of all of them is one called "Sketcher" I think. It's the ONLY one that's got the speed right. But it's got no pan and zoom or undo, and you can't change the brush size or opacity. (BTW Autodesk Sketchbook is a massive pile of crap, just straight port off the PC.) Or just a good decent notebook software. Most of them are a waste of energy. I'm sorry to say it just comes down to utter cluelessness about taste, design, end user needs and so on. And Linux people just don't do client side well. They don't know how. Android is probably a step in the right direction. But what's really a step in the right direction for Linux, is instead of 10+ years desperately, foamingly and tragically trying to replicate Windows 95/XP as Unix, at last start copying Apple. At least copying the right thing ( can't think of anything themselves of course). But overall the quality of software for Android, overall, is a shameful and embarrassing situation. (And I don't even understand what's going on on Google's Market. Seems to be rife with blatant copyright infringements.) However there are few exceptions. It depends what YOUR needs are, but things like a bar code scanner, and Mail Droid is a pretty good email client and about the closest thing yet I've seen to Mac/iphone quality. And the reason is the dev uses the system GUI. Still needs some polish but good. Titanium backup is also a must have app, which seems to do the job. ( Needs a root app as well Universal Androot) Launcher Pro is a must, it's much quicker and more customizable than whatever the crud the SF comes with. But then you wonder why they spoil it with that f--- ugly so-called '3d' option of a load of mushed up icons being pulled over a conveyor belt, probably Linux types think that is really cool (sigh) A good PDF reader of your choice, there's a few. Dropbox is good, but you made need it or not... not essential for everyone. However, if you want to play games the various Game Boy emulators and so on all seem quite good, although get slow in full screen mode. There's some good looking native games too. I was really impressed with the speed and performance of Raging Thunder on the SF. And although I haven't played it a lot of people like this angry bird thing. Edited December 14, 2010 by cartierv

I think android is developing OS and it still needs much improvement. But i am certain that upfront, android will become a great OS, far more than the iOS. Remember, android is only a 2 years old OS.
Guest Ricey155 Posted December 14, 2010 Report Posted December 14, 2010 i agree on apples R&D the whole look is amazing and thuse they charge for it which rightly they do but i just need something new to mess with ive had my iphone 11 months and installed eveything thats worth installing via cydia and app store the android offers a new view for me, both phones will be used daily as me and the misses use both i really can't stop messing with this £100 toy, i can't believe an iphone 3gs was £480 this is as fast if not slightly quicker in speed ok its not build as well but looks ok (id have liked a white version) cheers so far for all your top picks some good apps for me to work with :)

The volume is not "a bit low". With PowerAMP's EQ and gain you can push the volume to painful levels.

You have to appreciate what you like about Apple's control over the look and feel is exactly what a lot of people hate. Take a look at the thread about homescreens, where there's a plethora of looks, designs and styles. Something you don't get with Apple. A screen full of icons is all you can have, no personalisation, no widgets. The beauty of Android is that, if there's something in the core system you don't like, email, sms, browser, you can go to the market and get another. As for the OP... I have a lot of stuff installed, some good, some great. IMDb & Flixster... IMDb for the cast lists etc, Flixster because it gives me cinema listings based on my locations, not the US like IMDb disappointingly does TuneInRadio... FM reception where I live is appalling thanks to being surrounded by hills. beebPlayer... until the BBC get there fingers out and give us an official app Sky+... being able to program the Sky+ from anywhere is brilliant Our groceries... OK, so it's a sad one... but, with me and the mrs both having these phones, update the shopping list on one, updates on the other. No more ringing up halfway round the supermarket to see if she's remembered what it was we needed... Mindwallet... great way to store login details and all sorts of other private info. You can add custom categories, items and fields to make it work exactly as you want. Google Sky... for those times when a curious ten year old says.. Dad, what's that star? OK, not very often, but, you do look clever when you give an answer Talking Tom Cat... keeps the little ones quiet, ok, not quiet, but entertained ScummVM... for those of a certain age, the ability to play Day of the Tentacle and Sam And Max Hit The Road... ah... nostalgia

The beauty of Android is that, if there's something in the core system you don't like, email, sms, browser, you can go to the market and get another. And the problem is many on the market ain't as good. But there are some MailDroid is a good example. It's pretty much all there. Tiny tiny little sprinkle of jazz on it, some new icons and would be even better. And I do appreciate that. But then the problem I have with this, is what does it deliver? Is it delivering attractive, usable, credible alternatives ? Here's the thing. If Linux or Android delivered something so new and so great the world would look. But it doesn't and can't. And you have to ask why the whole Linux community right from the beginning, why it's invested 99.99999999% of its time in straight copying other people's systems and shoving it out there for free. Most of that time trying to remake Windows 95/98/XP That's a legacy it has created for itself. Linux is about replication. Not design. But I suppose there are some good signs. With android even Google realized that junk like X-Windows just ain't go anywhere. The Android team need to make really bold decisions about all this. More than just an SDK, perhaps encourage (if not enforce) some very basic guidelines about design to devs. Because what troubles me, is I'm not sure some of these 'developers' are even aware such things might exist. And always to encourage speed and fluidity. Perhaps it doesn't need to be quite as strict as Apple, but there is an issue here, and it's a shame. Edited December 14, 2010 by cartierv

True. but when the iron fist is missing you get EVERYTHING the iron fist would otherwise have crushed - the dross and some good things too. What you see is freedom - android allows folk to tinker - even tinker with rubbish. Apple is like the exclusionist club - everyone is welcome to buy a ticket but only the celebrities can contribute. Some people like it that way, but that's the difference.
