American Numbers? :S

Whenever i've backed up numbers its added in a few -'s into the numbers, which, was confusing as i didnt realise this until i wiped my contacts and restored them from a backup, and my texts jst started spouting out a "SMS not sent" error... I fixed it by jst opening up the backup file and mass replacing them with blank characters, anyone else had problems with this? I've only backed up from MCR r4 ROM and FLB-Froyo G2 r3 ROM but im assuming this is universal problem, for myself atleast.
