searching help for a custom rom

Hi,

i'm search all the possible help to do my own custom rom, based on an other custom rom (i heard that this was easier)

I have 2 questions right now

My device is an HTC desire HD

the Rom i wish to start with will be the revolution hd (a sense based) OR cyanogenmod

1: what tool do i need ?

I will try doing my work with the help of dsixda kitchen (but i'm not sure if i need other tool, or doing all the stuff by hand)

2: in witch data can I change the default home application ?

I guess that i need to change one xml file in system/customize (maybe COMMON.XML)

i want to set go launcher as the default home app
