Guest meinnit Posted December 14, 2010 Report Posted December 14, 2010 My friend's power button has totally given up. Everytime they want to wake the phone they have to get someone to call them! What are my options now? We know that menu to wake doesn't work so how else can I wake the phone?

Can we change the Key mapping : not great thou as all of them are handy. I assume you have tried pushing the button directly with the back off? Also if you short it does it work? - Maybe a repair shop (traditional one) will solder a new switch on.
Guest Kthulhu Posted December 14, 2010 Report Posted December 14, 2010 Free options: Shutting down - Quick Boot (need rot) Sent to sleep/off screen - Lockscreen Waking up/start on - push gently with your finger ..a free app of your hands :) You can set widgets/shortcuts in your home screen and with these two apps you will reduce 2 out of 3 times the number of hits on the power button.

Guest radeonuk Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 or you can modify /system/usr/keylayout/sholes-keypad.kl and change one of the other buttons to mean power on, maybe volume up or down?

I had this where the power button had to be pushed really hard....i simply removed the case and put it back on, you have to put the back panel on downward towards the bottom of the phone rather than just pressing front and back together mines been fine since
Guest flatnote31 Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 Had this a couple of days ago. Just called Orange and told'em about it. They sent a replacement the next day. Why bother with workarounds if you're still covered by warranty?
Guest juniperz Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 I now seem to have this problem - I can get it to work if I press really hard, but I wonder how long it will last before it fails all together. The thing that stops me returning it for a swap (apart from the fact that I bought it over the phone more than 5 weeks ago), is that I have an OLED and I will almost certainly get a TFT. Am I going to be really disappointed by the display? Is this outweighed by a more responsive touch screen? TIA

TIA Best to get it replaced even if it does mean having to give-up your OLED screen (Just check that you have the battery cover seated correctly (Align the top / power button and just clip the bottom down)

Any comments on whether I will be disappointed going OLED to TFT?
Guest zurpher Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 Yes, I have reseated it a few times - I had to get the battery out to turn it off last night. Any comments on whether I will be disappointed going OLED to TFT? It depends on your preferences whether your will be disappointed or not. TFT also has some advantages over OLED. It all has been discussed before in this forum and WWW at large. I think you will be fine.

I think this wouldn't work. I think I read somewhere that as soon as the phone does go to sleep the keys at the bottom are completely turned off. Also, the keypad is already right and allows to wake the phone with the home-, menu- and back-key. You can easily test this. While you play musik in the background to prevent that the phone goes to sleep, you can turn off the display and wake it up again with every key (tested on JJ RLS2). So the keys must be enabled for WAKE in the keylayout file. But if you turn everything off and wait some time so the phone goes to sleep, the keys do nothing. Maybe some of the devs can change something about this?
Guest David Horvath Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 (edited) Hi Guys, I have the same problem as others had before. I have to push the power on button really hard to take effect. Is there any workaround of fix for this? Did somebody successfully remapped the keys? Thanks, David Edit: Does anybody know this tool? http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/12/20/mo...e-line-of-code/ Edit2: Okay, this is working ;) You need to download it, and set it how you'd like. I've set the menu button to power and applied. Now its working like a charm. I would need a menu button now ;) Edited February 2, 2011 by David Horvath

I can provide details if you are not sure how to check this.

I.e using the menu button to wake up the phone? I tried to remap but could only get it to put the phone to sleep using menu button.
Guest womble_sanfran Posted February 3, 2011 Report Posted February 3, 2011 I think I have this power button issue as well. My button works intermittently, probably about half the time. When I take the back cover off and press the actual switch it works 100%. I understand the standard fix is a new phone (because the actual switch is at fault) but you keep your existing SIM, phone back and SD card, I am not sure this is what I need as I think it is just the back cover that I need. Has anyone else had this issue?
Guest David Horvath Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 Unfortunately it did not work at the end. I'm thinking about changing the button itself.
Guest cbarb Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 I think "softkeys for root users" available on the market might do it. I checked the description and it says they added a power button on there. I tried button saviour, another app. Both of which put buttons on your screen o replace the hardware buttons. Unfortunately I had problems with them both constantly freezing the phone, others have had success with it so it might be my rom. Can't recall a power button on Button Saviour though. Can't guarantee it will work for you but it's worth a shot. Personally I would try to remap one of the other hardware buttons as suggested in one of the posts above.
Guest David Horvath Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 My problem is the power on button is faulty. I would need an alternate button for waking the phone from sleep.
Guest cbarb Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 My problem is the power on button is faulty. I would need an alternate button for waking the phone from sleep. Sorry I didn't think about that. I just checked other forums and tried the following which will boot the device without the power button: When the phone is off (turn it off using an app) remove the battery, plug it into a PC via USB and put the battery back in. The phone will boot automatically (I tried it). The Nexus phones seem to have problems with power buttons and this is how they get around that problem. They have also remapped the buttons for power and the volume buttons for scrolling which looks interesting. I would still look into the remap options I am sure there must be something out there. If the phone is just in hibernate (screen off) I believe "widget locker" is mentioned alot for an auto awake but I have not tried it so it might be worth googling, according to reviews you should be able to wake it using the volume buttons. There isn't a free version to test this though.
Guest moka88 Posted May 2, 2011 Report Posted May 2, 2011 Anyone find a suitable work around for this? My sisters blade's power button works 1 out of 20 attempts and is obviously becoming extremely frustrating.

Guest Grain Posted May 2, 2011 Report Posted May 2, 2011 Anyone find a suitable work around for this? My sisters blade's power button works 1 out of 20 attempts and is obviously becoming extremely frustrating. Get some electronics spray for contact maintenance (something like "CRC 05101 QD Electronic Cleaner" or "Kontakt WL") and spray a tiny amount on the button (after removing the back and removing the battery, obviously). Be sure to use a spray that is not too agressive and don't spray other parts of the phone. If in doubt, apply just a drop using a toothpick. Press the button several times, remove any residue, and reassemble. Then report back here.
