app market dowloads not downloading & reset troubles

Got my sf yesterday & have been unable to download anything from the android marketplace with it, all downloads just hang saying that they are starting but never do, some searching led to a possible solution of reset to factory settings but now that I've done that it just hangs on the 'validating phone number' part of the set up when you add email. Any ideas what's going on or how to sort it? other than going back to the shop which would mean my new phone lasted less than 24 hours

& oddly its working again, so a change of tack, anyone know how to set an mp3 for message notification? if its possible
