Guest davnig Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 Well, story so far. . . dropped my phone weeks ago and have lived with cracked cover since then, don't take many pics so can live with it. Being an eternal fiddler was playing about with it today (encouraged by co-worker who also has phone I must add lol) and tried gently poking it with a small implement (screwdriver) to see if it would come off. It did, but cracked further thus rendering it totally useless, ah well. So pulled off rest of what was left. Must admit, picture quality is much better, as has been stated elsewhere. But now have sticky residue which is going to get stickier and dirtier. Has anyone cleaned this off and if so, what did you use. Don't want to experiment with risk of melting plastic if someone has already successfully managed it. As an aside, the cover feels like glass rather than plastic and is very fragile.

I'd have a go with some white spirit and cotton wool, but I'd wait to see if anyone else has a better solution (no pun) before having a go

Will update if successful
Guest SPH Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 I'd have a go with some white spirit and cotton wool, but I'd wait to see if anyone else has a better solution (no pun) before having a go I'd avoid white spirit, it might attack the plastic - it definitely "eats" certain plastics so it's not a risk I'd take anyway. Try IPA or "sticky stuff remover" (google it, you can get it all over the place)
Guest Fi5h Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 WD40 is great for taking off sticky stuff - use it on most things, including jam jars :) Seeing the area is so small a cotton bud would help rub it in
Guest kuji Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 no bloody wd40 on a lens !!! no fscking way... as SPH suggests IPA is the only way to go... avoid white spirit / acetone
Guest davnig Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 no bloody wd40 on a lens !!! no fscking way... as SPH suggests IPA is the only way to go... avoid white spirit / acetone It's not the lens i'd be cleaning, but the case where the glass cover was, hence the sticky gunk

Guest SPH Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 Greene King IPA??? it might be a good enough pint, but never thought that'd be one of its uses :) Not quite high enough in alcohol :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isopropanol Just bought a litre off ebay, delivered for just over a fiver. Don't be mixing it in with that Green King version though for an "extra kick" :(
Guest davnig Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 Didn't need to clean gunk off in end as filled void in with some sugru (silicone-like putty) here's a pic

Guest davnig Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 Exactly - nobody mentioned a lens :) Glad you managed to find a solution I think it's the best I'm going to get for a cracked lens cover, unless, a small piece of quality glass in the sugru, Hmmm, maybe in time
