Switch to a 16Gb MicroSD card

I apologise if this is a dumb question BUT ...

I intend to swap out the 4Gb card that came with my Vega to a 16Gb Class 4 card (£15-99 from Play).

Is it best to copy all of the files from the 4Gb card to the 16Gb card or does the system "rebuild" the directory structure when it boots up? Not sure how all of the files / directories on the 4Gb card got their in the 1st place, as the Vega comes with the card installed!

Any special formatting requirements?

Cheers

You should just be able to copy everything from 4gb card to pc, then from pc to new 16gb card.

As for format - standard fat32 I believe is ok. Although you may not need to format.

Yep that is exactly what I did. I did have to format my card in the PC first though as the Vega would not read it or format it??? Anyway it's working fine now. I think those Play cards are rebranded Sandisc. I have had a Sandisc in my Desire for a while now, and no problems yet. They are only class two but I read that Sandisc are quite conservative with their read / write speeds so they tend to be quicker than most unbranded cards.

Yup - I did Settings, SD Card, Unmount SD card. Then removed 4Gb card, inserted 16Gb card. The Vega picked it up fine then set up its directory structure - not sure if the card was formatted already or not as didn't check it. Certainly Format SD card option was not available on Vega just after I inserted 16Gb card.

So in theory to complete the job copy all files you want/need from 4Gb card before you start and copy them back when 16Gb card is ready.

OK .. more info on a Sandisk 16Gb Class 4 card!

I have tried formatting:-

(1) In Vega

(2) In PC using standard Win 7 formatter

(3) using SD Formatter

None of which makes the slightest bit of difference.

I can copy:-

(1) Directly to Vega

(2) Directly to microSD card mounted in a card reader hooked up to my PC

None of which makes any difference

In every case -- no matter what I copy over to the Vega seems to end up in LOST.DIR

I am ejecting the USB from my PC in an orderly manner - all done properly, but no matter what method I use, the files end up in the LOST.DIR

Strangley - when I copy files over to the Vega direct (lets say) - once copied I can explore the SD card in the Vega & see all of the files.

It all seems to go tits up when I disconnect the USB - then the Vega re-initialises the card & all the darned files have ended up in LOST.DIR :)

Is anyone else getting this problem? Its driving me nuts!

Cheers

@Jelly,

If you are comfortable with adb, could you provide the output from:

adb shell mount

Edit: Seems that the SD card is not mounted correctly. Did you copy the LOST.DIR folder from the 4GB card?

Also, what happens when you format the SD card (using your PC) and then, with the freshly formatted card, download a file? Where does it end up?

(1) never used adb but will give it a whirl (@ work now - will try when I get home) - how do I access adb, and input "adb shell mount"? I have pauls r5 +pp running.

(2) Yes I did copy over the LOST.DIR from the 4Gb card

(3) I'll try re-formatting the 16Gb card again tonight using SD Formatter & just sticking it in the Vega with a couple of files I have copied to it. Each time I have copied the full contents of the 4Gb card (copy of my PC's hard disk) to the 16Gb card. Are the sector sizes the same on a 16Gb card? Wonder if this makes a difference?

I cannot for the life of me format the 16Gb card in the Vega, however will try again!

Trouble is something like this drives you nuts - consumes just about all of my spare time! I havent even wrapped up a Xmas pressie yet! :)

Thanks for your help - its much appreciated ;)

ALL SORTED!

Am I a happy bunny? :)

My problems were with the 16Gb microSD card -- late today another card arrived from Play - same 16Gb device that I had received previously (ordered for my friend) - this one wasn't marked Sandisc. I formatted it using SD Formatter (Win XP machine) -- copied over 3 x 600Mb DivX (avi) files & BINGO! They all played!

Did the same with some MP3 files - again - all OK!

This time I was using NSWPlayer (which looks like a neat proggy)

The **ONLY** issue I had was with about 10 ePub books load into the ePub/import folder. Only half were actually read & imported! Not sure why, but - hey I am not bothered really, using the Vega as an eBook reader after my Kindle 3 is like starring into the sun for 2 minutes! I never bought it for this anyway.

SO - TO ALL THAT HELPED - A VERY BIG - THANK YOU!

I would never have believed that a memory card could cause so much bother!

Ya know - I have been a member of XDA for quite some time & had lost faith in "techy" forums, for fear of being hastily rebuked for (i) not having "read so-in-so" or (ii) searched "so-in-so" etc - as so often happens at XDA. So many there are so quick to "do you down"! Very sad!

On the other hand - this site is a breath of fresh air, and the highly responsive community spirit is, put quite simply, - AMAZING!

Cheers - and Merry Xmas to you all
