Guest derhanswurst Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 Does the 3d tilt function not work on the Desire or am I missing something?
Guest irishandrew Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 Does the 3d tilt function not work on the Desire or am I missing something? Yes it works fine; e.g. in portrait place two fingers on the screen in a similar horizontal plane, then push both either up or down together to get the desired effect. Using your finger to pivot around another does not work, but the 3D tilt using multitouch is working as designed. -Andrew
Guest Marand Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 (edited) http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/a...?answer=1079043 Seems the Desire is only partially supported. You can get the gestures from the above link. The 3D building view is only in 100+ cities worldwide. Have a look at Cardiff, Birmingham or Dublin to see it in action. http://www.google.com/mobile/maps/3d/ Edited December 16, 2010 by Marand
Guest derhanswurst Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 Thanks. Too bad 3d rotation doesn't work. It still looks pretty cool, though.
Guest le_lutin Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 Thanks. Too bad 3d rotation doesn't work. It still looks pretty cool, though. It sorta works for me. Just that the multitouch in the desire isn't great.

Guest zoltar99 Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 I cannot get the 3D buildings on my Desire either. I tried New York and a few other cities that Google says are supported. I can get tilt and compass to work, but no 3D. I tried restarting Google Maps, the phone, but still no 3D.

I just uninstalled all google maps updates using google market, then installed everything back again. Now its working fine!!!

I understand 3d rotation doesn't work because of hardware limitations (multitouch).

The 3D rotation does not. He just asked he was unable to see 3D buldings and I fixed it just uninstalling and reinstalling GM updates. Edited December 21, 2010 by Volgera
Guest le_lutin Posted December 21, 2010 Report Posted December 21, 2010 The 3D rotation does not. He just asked he was unable to see 3D buldings and I corrected it just uninstalling and reinstalling GM updates. Just to be clear: the 3D rotation does work for me as long as i keep my fingers in different "quadrants" of the screen and that my fingers never cross horizontally or vertically. It's not exactly ideal, but it does work!

Perhaps I need to configure something else on the phone so it can work like u said!!! :)

I honestly didn't configure anything differently at all. I just installed the maps from the market. I have a Desire HD ROM installed. That shouldn't make a difference though.
Guest EddyOS Posted December 21, 2010 Report Posted December 21, 2010 (edited) That could actually be exactly why it's different!! I'm using eMIUI and don't get rotation, just the tilt Edited December 21, 2010 by EddyOS

Guest le_lutin Posted December 21, 2010 Report Posted December 21, 2010 That's why!!! Using a Desire HD ROM enables rotating. My phone is not rooted so I use HTC stock ROM. :) I wonder if google maps checks which phone it's being installed on and disables the functionality if it's a normal desire. They've probably done this because it doesn't actually work very well on the Desire. I'd be pretty sure there is somewhere where you can enable the rotation by way of hacking a config file or something.
Guest le_lutin Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 Looks like there is a config file which needs to be hacked in order to get the multitouch to work. More details here: http://miui-blog.com/blog/how-to/multi-tou...and-htc-desire/
Guest EddyOS Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 OOoo, nice!! Will try this once I'm at home
Guest le_lutin Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 OOoo, nice!! Will try this once I'm at home Don't hold out any hope of it being a smooth experience (the rotation that is). Google disabled it for the Desire for a good reason (cos it doesn't work very wel). They REALLY should have allowed some other way to rotate the map though (e.g. even just a single button on the UI which spins the map clockwise when you press it)
Guest EddyOS Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 I'm not, got a proper sat nav from work but would be nice to see if 'working'
Guest le_lutin Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 I've perfected a technique which actually works ok for rotation (I actually read this somewhere else and then stuck my own bit on at the end). For rotation: -hold your thumb down on the bottom left-hand corner of the screen (your thumb must stay in this position the whole time). -using the index finger of your other hand, swipe left or right in an arc motion (say from about 1 o'clock to about 5 o'clock) or vice versa. The map will rotate. Both the thumb and the finger should still be on the screen. - (Now this is the crucial step and if you don't do this, the map will go mental. ) In a fairly quick motion lift your thumb FIRST, immediately followed by your finger. The map should stay in the place you rotated to. Repeat until dizzy!
