Seb, bear in mind that a "nervous newbie" with an unmolested phone most likely has no idea what adb might be, let alone how to get it working!

Volunteers should be aware that

1/ Sebastian404 is trying to get a copy of some of the original software from the phone which is normally overwritten by the modification process.

2/ Having this software copied (and thus able to be restored to your or others' phones) could be useful if a software-modified phone were to develop a hardware fault, requiring its return. Other benefits might possibly also come from an examination of the captured software.

3/ The process of taking the copy isn't going to damage your phone or your computer - but it does involve installing (at least) one component of Google's Android Software Development Kit (the "SDK"). That component is called "adb". If your computer is running Windows, you have to install an extra bit of usb driver software to allow adb to talk to the phone.

4/ The process only involves typing commands at your computer - no 'hardware hacking' of phone or computer is involved! Just connecting to it by usb.

5/ Seb can explain exactly what's needed -- but what timezone he's in, on any given day, seems rather unpredictable!

A guide simple guide of how to dump it would probably help increase confidence

Tbh I don't even know how to use Adb.. Never tried :)

Drivers, expect a command prompt etc.

Also let them know that they can't screw up their device by dumping it ;)

there's a sealed, boxed San Francisco (not even broken out the watch yet) at my mum's house currently... I'm on my way there this evening to get it. As I just ordered it I assume it may be B08

i could have a go if it's easy?

I'll also be in possession of two unmolested white models that I've purchased as gifts later this afternoon. I also have installed the sdk to learn and do some general tinkering on other OSFs in the household, but I'm unsure of what I need to do specifically to get the recovery partition for you Sebastian.

I've done some pulling and pushing via adb, but I'm still relatively green, so if someone could give a little instruction I'd be happy to help out and upload the contents.

If you and insurgente could send Seb a Personal Message (via this forum, link up near top right of the page) then I'm sure he'll be right back to you (either when he wakes up or gets out of whatever meeting ...)

Copying the phone's original software to the computer does involve typing commands.

Let Seb provide the details.

I've no problem using the command line and if reports are correct, all white phones will be B08 so we're sorted there once I know how to dump what Seb needs.

I'll shoot him a PM and see where we go from there.

It is often unpredictable to me too.. I'm currently in London, but due to fly back to the Bay Area Sunday... I'm keeping an eye on the Weather right now....

The problem we have is that whoever dumped the B08 ROM originally had installed clockworkmod before doing it, so we don't have a good recovery partition.

The simplest way is to use the romdump program:

http://android.podtwo.com/romdump/

There are instructions on there that *should* be fairly straight forward.

When its done, you should have a directory on your SDCARD called something like /romdump/OUK_P729BV1.0.0B08/ I only need the recovery.img file from there, if you could upload it somewhere and post it here, or shoot me a PM.....

Heathrow... I ended up missing my flight out of Heathrow earlier this year so I'm wary of it now.

I am flying Business Class, so I fully plan on making a fuss in case of snow :)

Sebastian,

Link to recovery image has been PM'd

Let me know if I did it right!

Thanks

I can do it later tonight.

I have a OSF (TFT) with build number: OUK_P729BV1.0.0B08. I have only unlocked it, nothing else.

Would that do?

I'm out here for work, and I was due to fly back last week, but they extended it by a week... so I made a HUGE fuss about it, and even after that they could not get me into First Class :D

I'm flipping sick of the cold, I remember why I moved to the Bay Area in the First place ;)

i had it, in fact i've uploaded it on here somewhere but i cant find the post.

in all fairness it is identical to the tmobile hungerian rom 1. so the recovery.img from that file that we use in the "image" folder is identical, i know this as i tested it out on the new tft one which i had bought to send to family in east africa who recently herd of android :(

i will search my laptop once again just incase.

just a question, the file system for this is yaffs, the file system for gingerbread is ext4, you said in another thread that you can't dd=.... copy the system and convert that into an img but how do u do that for ext 3 and then ext 4 if you have any idea. just for future reference.

so seb i have OUK 05 phone with bad battery and dead USB, i can borrow my cousins battery, but do u have an easy solution for me to flash with maybe my sd card and get rid of super user, Clockwork, Boot screen etc.

You have 3 options, one groundbreaking and brave and potentially easy, two not so intersting...

1. Get hold of the hungarian memory fix update, follow the instructions, but replace the system.img, boot.img and recovery.img with stock before flashing

2. Assuming clock work can resore recovery, do a backup, replace system.img, boot.img and recovery.img with stock, generate md5 sums then use clockwork to restore

3. If clockwork cant restore recovery Use clockwork to flash stock boot and system (by doing a backup, replace with stock and generate md5) then boot up and Use a temp root option to flash recovery from terminal emulator on the phone - eg flash_image recovery /sdcard/ecovery.img , since it's a temp root it should be gone when you reboot

Hello Sebastian,

I tried to follow your instructions to create a backup copy of my phone. Below I've put the output I got as I did it. The problem is that Ican0't find the files anywhere. Any suggestions?

[*] Try to invoke hotplug now, clicking at the wireless

[*] You succeeded if you find /system/bin/romdump.

It should be on the SD Card in the phone in a directory called romdump.
