hardbutton/-key "return" doesn't work?

hey all,

i was wondering, why my SF lost 40% of battery over this night, about 8 hours time...

then looked at "running apps" and saw, that browser was still open - but I surely quit it with the return-button last night.

I found the same issue two days ago, when I left google-maps, but had to force-close it again in settings.

Does anybody know about this problem?

I'm on FLB's froyo, OLED-SF, old clockword-version and didn't have any problems like that the last weeks ;)

Many thanks in advance for help & sorry for my bad english :)

Apps you've used stay loaded even when you exit them. They're meant to do this for quicker access next time. But they just stay in ram doing nothing so they won't use any battery. From what I've read, Froyo will even reload stuff you force close in an effort to discourage you from closing them!

The most likely cause is the phone is failing to sleep because of some app you have installed (like mylock or somehing). After the phone as appeared to sleep for 20 seconds or so try pressing the buttons along the bottom - they should do nothing. If they bring up the screen then it wasn't asleep.

if you think that the return button wont work, try this:

It sounds to me more like he's expecting the button to do something it doesn't do rather than it physically not working? The button does not unload apps.

I've read even most threads in here and I know about this - and that task-killers won't do anything on froyo....

... but in my case, I didn't change anything the last 2 weeks and suddenly this poroblem appears :)

I agree, that e.g. market, phone, widgets, etc. shall stay at the RAM, but if I close browser or Facebook or sth., they should finish, right? But they're still shown @ "currently running" (sorry, don't know the english translation, as I'm on german settings). hope you know, what I mean

and I'm pretty sure, that these running services WILL drain my life, if I don't force-close them

but I really can't imagine, why it is like that.

// edit: just imagine:

4 days ago I played abuction for 2mins and left it with the return button. after 4hours my battery was eaten up and I looked at battery usage: "90% abduction". looked at "currently running" and there it was still open ;)

Some apps do have an exit option, stock android browser, angry birds are two that spring to mind. Whilst Angry Birds will completely unload, browser will remain in memory, although any sites you have open will be closed.

Press the menu button and see if there is an option in Abduction. If there isn't, and it's killing your battery, you may have to force close it, and complain to the developers that their app is badly written.

yeah my browser stays in memory even when I use the menu option to exit it. I don't have facebook so I can't comment on that. The majority of my apps stay in memory after leaving them - that's just the way Android is designed.

Unless those apps are using a lot of CPU time or are data synching a lot then they aren't your problem and you should be looking for another cause.

Get yourself an app that will show you the CPU seconds used by each app. I use this one - http://www.appbrain.com/app/systempanellit...app.systempanel. You need to set up an option to show the individual CPU second counts for each app.

You will find several apps may be loaded, waiting in the wings in case they are needed, but using no CPU whatsoever. You might also find some greedy app that is sucking up loads of CPU cycles even when it should be doing nothing.

I use watchdog lite, is this the same?

And another question: Is there a possibility to find out, if an app prevents the phone from sleep? any idea of that?

Don't take this as gospel, but from memory (I used to use Watchdog Lite but replaced it with the SystemPanelLite app some time ago) I don't think Watchdog Lite shows cumulative total CPU for each app. It shows the CPU% at any moment in time, which can be useful, but will only indicate a misbehaving app while it is misbehaving. If you have an app that periodically make heavy demands on the battery you might not notice from the information presented by Watchdog Lite. You can install he SystemPanelLite app temporarily if you like, get the stats/evidencec you need and then uninstall it if you want.

I can't help you on the second point.
