Titanium Backup. Verify ROM is rooted

Hi, Please can someone in the know help me with this error message? I have an orange sanfran with a tft screen so I cant update the rom.

I'm using gifgaf & would like to remove all the junk orange apps.

I read somewhere that you can do this using an app called titanium backup, which I have. When I install it I get an error message saying that the installation has failed & to verify that the "rom is rooted"

I have no idea what this means or how to verify that it is. Please can someone explain this to a newbie to android phones.

Or if there is a better way of deleting all the orange apps that someone knows of thats easy for a newbie to follow then please would you tell me how to do it.

Thanks very much.

Titanium requires the phone to be rooted first. People here recommend a specific version of Universal Androot (I believe it's 1.6.2 beta 5)

When it's installed properly it will offer to download busybox. Let it.

Also I think USB debugging needs to be enabled.

or the stable version below that as I couldn't get the rooting to stick after a reboot with the beta... seems a bit temperamental after the 5th try I was almost getting tempted to get out the candles and incense and start dancing round the thing xD

Thanks. I had heard about universal androot. But it says on their web site it nolonger works. My problem is as a newbie unless you speak this technical language it may as well be written in russian. Their web site says...

"EDIT2: Since Google patched the loop hole in 2.2.1, this app is no longer working for newer builds. For this reason the developer has stopped supporting the app."

It goes on to say there is another wan superoneclick isnt compatible with the sanfran that uses a tft screen as it says its only compatible with these phones

" * Nexus One

* Samsung Galaxy S i9000

* Samsung Captivate

* Samsung Vibrant"

They also say its possibe to root via unrevoked but again its not compatible with the sanfran's

I beleive that my phone is a newer build as I hve tried 2 rom updates. the 1st caused the phone to sleep & never wake up.

The second turned the colour orange to blue.

I beleive its something to do with the new san fran using a TFT screen rather than an old & thus far nobodys managed to figure out how to fix the rom issues so I have to keep going back to the orange standard rom.

I just would like to remove all the orange branded junk as I'm using gifgaf so if anyone does know how its done I'd begreatful if they can share it. I'll hen try & ocument it so other newbies like myself can follow it.

So if anyone with a sanfran that has a TFT screen has figured out how to root it or remove orange unwanted apps will they please tell me how?

Thanks for your help.

the orange rom on your phone is only 2.1, you will have to put it on your sd card and install it via the Filer application on your phone.

I had a couple of issues with Androot, and found the easiest way to run it, was to install, turn off phone, turn on phone, run Androot.

this will work, then install Superuser from the market so that you dont need to run Androot ever again, then grab Titanium Backup, and Superuser will grant it root rights.

Thanks hecatae. I beleive the oled & tft sanfrans both use 2.1 but NONE of the roms released so far other than the orange one will work with the tft screen.

I tried following some instructions last night but my phone now shows the colour orange a blue :-(

So I'm going to hve to go back to the ouk_p729bv1.0.0b08 as this is the only one that works with the sanfran that uses tft screens.

hi,

Ive just rooted my new san francisco bought only a week ago using universal androot, the phone came preinstalled with firmware version 2.1 update 1, kernel 2.6.29 zte-kernel@zdroid-smt

http://www.addictivetips.com/wp-content/up...rsalAndroot.zip

I then used astro file manager to install the downloaded universalandroot.apk file copied to the sd card then installed and followed the rooting instructions, I then downloaded Titanium Backup Free and used it to download a working copy of Busy Box as the one previously downloaded didnt work, also you need to turn on usb debugging on the phone, just follow the instructions in Titanium Backup and you wont go wrong. Ive now uninstalled alot of the Orange crap apps off me phone and has freed up more memory.

I couldnt root my phone using the clockwork recovery mod and fastboot, as I came across driver issues with windows vista when I connected the phone using the usb cable, but using the above method Ive been able to root and remove the orange apps, but still get the orange splash screen at startup, so unless I sort out the driver problem I still have the orange firmware on the phone but minus their crappy apps.

Hope this helps,

Damian.

Thanks for your advice I'll give it ago.

drobson67. You sound like you know what your doing although as I understand it the orange rom is the only rom that works with the new orange phone (like mine & by the sounds of it yours) none of the other roms work with the tft screen so its probably good news you havent got your usb drivers working as you'd now have a phone that once it goes to sleep the only way to wake it is to take out the battery or like mine is now, showing the colour orange as blue :-(

I'm not sure what as given you the impression that only the stock orange ROM works, check the forums and you'll see that some ROMs are marked OLED and some OLED+TFT.

In my investigation of this whole issue with Titanium Backup....

It is VERY picky about some things, it has to have the version of SU and busybox it is expecting, it also has to the version of SuperUser it is expecting..

And if its not exactly how it wants it, it claims that the phone is not rooted...

I say use the backup/recovery in ClockWorkMod.. it works perfectly :)
