Dead screen, but rooted - will Orange repair/replace?

I have had an HTC Desire from Orange in August that I rooted and Froyo-ed. It was as part of a 24 month upgrade for my wife who then gave me the phone because she prefers her old Nokia (go figure).

I woke up this morning, but sadly my phone didn't - when I turned it on the screen greeted me with a slightly grey glow rather than the usual HTC splash screen. Its clearly working (all the lights and various vibrations are happening) but the screen is dead.

So, I was safe in the knowledge that I could always flash with the stock Orange OS and return for repair - however, now the screen is dead, I have no way of doing this (?).

If I take it back to an Orange shop, they will obviously take it and send off for repair, but what will happen then? I'm guessing they'll refuse to repair it as I have broken the terms of my warranty. Or will they?

Has anyone either got experience of this process or know if there is some way of me telnetting onto it or doing something REALLY clever that will allow me to restore the stock OS before returning it?

Help!

If you're really worried, you could always use the android sdk to bring your mobile screen to the computer. Then you can restore, I guess?

OK, that sounds interesting. I've downloaded & installed the SDK - anybody help with a guide or pointers on how to control my phone from it?

To be honest mate, as the screen is dead they will just replace it or flash the s/w again anyway, they won't bother going to the lengths of replace screen then check s/w to see if this dastardly user has been rooting and s-offing, there's no time!

I had a h/w situation (sd reader), then flashed the wrong ruu in an attempt to unroot resulting in dead screen, they just replaced mobo (for original issue) and a new screen, no q's. That was T-Mobile.

As for the sdk method, you may cause yourself more harm than good if you're not familiar with it. I'm not too sure what you would do with it, perhaps get into recovery and try restoring? but if the screen is dead without you having done anything (unless you mod in your sleep!) then I'd say it's an actual h/w issue so restoring wouldn't really achieve anything.
