Guest capt.kipper Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 Don'y know if this has been reported here already but I just found this. Android 2.3 source code released by Google http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-co...y-google-916848
Guest Rem1x Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 USE THE SEARCH. We have a build from the code, for gods sake!
Guest cobhc Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 *to the theme of Beadle's about* ................."Watch out, angry Scottsman about!"
Guest Stuart_f Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 This is also the second idiot who has told us this *breaking news* several days late.
Guest Rem1x Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 This is also the second idiot who has told us this *breaking news* several days late. Thank you. To OP. Just please. Use the search. We'll all love you. To all people in the community. Use the search. Please.
Guest capt.kipper Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 What a friendly forum... Don't think I will bother posting here again! :)
Guest Swimmerboy Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 What a friendly forum... Don't think I will bother posting here again! :) I wouldn't take it too personally - the response might have been a bit harsh, but it's so infuriating when you're browsing through a forum and it's cluttered with people asking questions that have been answered repeatedly, or re-posting information that's common knowledge to 90% of the community. There's a 15 page post already about Gingerbread on the first page of the forum (so no searching needed) called "2.3 for San Fran" - I'd recommend you have a browse through that if you're interested in the announcement.
Guest rayraven Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 (edited) Offtopic, but we should probably have a sub-forum, one for general chat & one for development. A few more stickies wouldnt hurt either. We have 500+ users at any time generally, so a sub-forum is probably what's needed. @Mods, hope you're listening[or reading] :) Edited December 20, 2010 by rayraven
Guest Stuart_f Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 A few more stickies wouldnt hurt either. We have nearly half a page worth of stickies already. The regular users know the content of these threads and the noobs don't bother reading them before they start spamming so I doubt that creating more would help. A more visible search option might help (few people seem to make it to the bottom of the page before feeling that they need to share their mind and even fewer notice the option in the menu bar) as would a warning on the "create thread" button that asks if you have searched first.

Or, put some safeguards in place, like unable to start new threads unless you have 50 (or whatever number is agreed) posts to your name, or have been registered for a certain time, anything that would indicate people are starting genuine new threads not re-hashes of old one, or even asking questions which just pop into their heads when the answer is in some other thread they cannot be bothered to read. I'm sure people who've been here for a while can spot these 'duplicate' threads a mile off by now; usual ones like 'My fm radio doesn't work on 2.2 rom I just loaded from this site', 'How can i change the green android picture at boot up?' etc..... Helping people is what these forums are all about and it should be a welcoming and friendly place, but sometimes it does appear that there are a lot of 'lazy' people out there that just want to be spoon-fed. Unfortunately, in general terms, the net has undoubtely helped to bring this situation about. Why should i do hours or reading, learning and research when the answer is immediately available without having to go through any of that 'pain' ? Edited December 20, 2010 by xzyk
Guest uberduck Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 (edited) to be fair there are over half a page of sticky posts on the first page, and all the other posts with similar titles come up and down every few times a day I would say it's a bit difficult for someone who is new to the forum to read and remember all the stories. If you find these repeating questions a bit annoying then you could probably kindly ask them to use the search function, and better still, post a link to the proper resources like another thread, so in case anyone came to this thread in the future from the search would be guided to the right page. On the other hand if you find these repeating questions irritating, then why don't you sit back, take a deep breath, brace yourself and click on the "back" button, it's better to let this thread sink than making mean comments. I know not all of you may agree with me but then when you see a thread with so called "stupid questions": just try to be helpful :) Edited December 20, 2010 by uberduck

My bold. I couldn't disagree more. If we spoon-feed the trolls then people will expect answers without doing any reading themselves. This is a community and you should give as much to the community as you take from it. To my mind this means you should help yourself before asking others to give their time to you. I'm all for helping people who have genuine problems but laziness is not included in that. Edit to add, if we could, somehow, get rid of these pointless threads then it would be a LOT easier to find the real info that is here for those who take the time to find it. Guest Raspa Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 Trolls? It is people who have posted a duplicate, they aren't trolling anyone. I could understand the attitudes shown here if we were on one of the more developer orientated sites, but modaco certainly isn't one of them - this place seems more aimed at the newer users. Point them in the right direction and they'll soon learn.
Guest Ibcus Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 I wouldn't call someone asking for help a troll, even if the question has been asked 100 times. After all the search function on here is not the best in the world. I've searched for things and been given a thread with 90+ pages to sift through, with no option to search in that thread from what I could see. A search this thread option would be very handy. In defence of the original poster how was he to know the thread on 2.3 was using the released source code and not a leaked earlier version? There is no need at all to be so rude to someone that has took the time to try and help, if not to read every topic on here.
Guest Stuart_f Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 Point them in the right direction and they'll soon learn. Evidence does not support this. Search for the words "search before posting" in the San Fran forum and you'll find 44 threads containing exactly this phrase. There are countless more containing something similar. People do not learn! A search this thread option would be very handy. It already exists, look at the bottom left of the last thread on the page. It's called "Search Topic"
Guest Raspa Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 Evidence does not support this. Search for the words "search before posting" in the San Fran forum and you'll find 44 threads containing exactly this phrase. All by the same person? Or did the original person who had the search engine pointed out to them then go on to use it in future? If the latter then the evidence does support it.
Guest Arr Too Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 Repeat posts and the same old questions will always happen, regardless of the razor wire that's erected. :) Sticky threads (with helpful titles) DO help and do drastically reduce the rubbish. But you'll never eliminate it completely. 'Tis human nature.
