Hi, I have an Orange San Francisco which I have rooted and loaded a custom rom using Clockworkmod.

However, I have a problem with the phone which means I want to return it to the place of purchase and get it swapped so I need to remove all the custom stuff.

I have already re-loaded the stock Orange firmware and erased the data & cache. However, how do I remove the Clockworkmod and the bootloader so that the phone is back to it's original state.

Thanks for any help

Russell

You'd have to find a stock recovery image (think it's on here somewhere?) and flash that using fastboot, or "flash_image recovery <filename>" from a terminal emulator on the phone.

To be honest I'm not sure I'd bother. I had to return my first San Fran after 2 days as it wouldn't pick up a signal - didn't bother removing Clockwork as I thought there was very little chance of them a) Checking :) Knowing what it was and c) Being able to do anything to me as it was a PAYG phone and they'd already authorised the replacement.

Looking at the fastboot command list I'm assuming the following command will remove the Clockworkmod stuff

fastbot-windows erase

Would I be right in this assumption.

I've already flashed the stock Orange firmware to the phone. So now it boots into the original Orange stuff. I just wanted to get rid of the "VOL down PWR on" bootloader.

Anyway, as it is going back to Argos I think you are right in that it won't matter.

Thanks

Woa, Fastboot Is For Flashing Images To The SF So If you Do That then wont it erase more than clockwork mod?

"fastboot erase recovery" (if you've got the development stuff installed) or "fastboot-windows erase recovery" (if you've just downloaded fastboot) might work actually.

This will erase your recovery partition, so you'll lose clockwork. I'm not sure if there'd be any other side effects but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will be along shortly :)

I don't know which is why I'm asking for some advice before I go ahead and do something which I may regret later.

Ah, now it starts to make sense. I wasn't aware that "recovery" is the partition name. So the command "fastboot-windows flash recovery clockwork.img" is flashing the .img file to the recovery partition. It's obvious now I think about it but it just didn't click before.

Therefore, I agree, "fastboot-windows erase recovery" should then erase the recovery partition.

The fog is gradually lifting.

Thanks

I used to work for Argos part time on weekends and I caught out a few people who flashed their phones, I refused the exchange because they voided their warranty as per our terms and conditions.

Does it void the warranty though? Surely it depends what's wrong with it? If I flash a new ROM, overclock the processor and the CPU dies then it's due to my fault - I'll live with it, similar to dropping it and the screen smashing.

If I upgrade the OS from 2.1 to 2.2 and one of the buttons falls off then surely that's not due to me messing around with the software?

Your 'warranty' terms and conditions cannot affect statutory rights ie. SOGA. If somebody has flashed their phone and it is broken within 6 months of purchase the onus is on Argos to prove the flashing caused the issue. After 6 months the onus would be on a customer.

Depends on the warranty T&Cs. Their T&C has no bearing whatsoever on SOGA rights though which is why you always see the "this does not affect your statutory rights" after them.

If you want it back to stock dont' do an erase. fastboot the original recovery partition back, use search the same question has been asked a ton of times.

I have searched extensively but couldn't find a definitive answer. Perhaps it was not using the correct terminology in which case I appologise. However, that is why I was asking for some guidance here.

Anyway, it is all academic now as I have just got the phone swapped at Argos. The reason I wanted it swapped was that the battery cover wouldn't clip on in one corner. It was ok without the battery in place but as soon as the battery was installed the cover just wouldn't clip on properly. It seemed like the battery wasn't quite seating far enough down and was protruding a fraction.

So now back to rooting this one.

Thanks for everyones input.

I think most (if not all) of the images in the Stock ROMs thread now include flashing the recovery partition (as well as wiping the data and cache) -- this obviously puts you back as close as possible to the factory default (which may in some cases be the state before you received it from the nice Orange employee, who will probably have put the SIM in and booted it up once to check it was all working).

Clockwork, ideally you want a nandroid/clockwork backup of a stock phone and install that.

Yes, but that won't get rid of clockwork on the recovery partition. To do that you either need fastboort (no go because of USB), or a clockwork/nandroid backup of stock (this includes the recovery partition and the boot img). I'm sure somebody has that?

Erm... How do you get a clockwork/nandroid backup of a stock recovery partition without flashing clockwork/nandroid to the recovery partition? Sounds like you're trying to lift yourself off the ground with your own boot laces :)

Yup; and sometimes staff think that company policy trumps consumer law, and they get educated by me - as slowly and painfully as they like.

(Although twice I copped out with: "well if you think it works, you sell it to someone else and give me one that works" - I got a result twice that way!)
