Everyone should know Swype BETA is now Officially available to download for your SanFran/Blade and works great! :)

Just visit and register at http://beta.swype.com/

(Important: You will need to register with your email address that you can access via your phone and also activate your email address via link.) Swype will then email you to installation loader https://beta.swype.com/android/get/ - all this is done on your phone.

Once run you will be giving 2 options full version (10MB) or English/Spanish version (2.6MB), obviously if you just use English select the later option.

Really impressed with this so far and much better than SlideIT. My top tip - just Swype as fasts as you can ignoring the confirmation boxes and then re-correct any mistakes later by double-tapping the word. ;)

I've been using Swype for a few months - I had the early Beta on my HTCHero before I switched to the San Fran. I've tried several other keyboards (SwiftKey, ThickButtons and even stuck with the crazy 8pen for a week), but I keep coming back to Swype. It's improved a lot since the first version I tried - it's now much quicker and more accurate.

Get it. It's great.

Did you know: You can get arrows for moving around and editing text by swyping from the swype icon to the "SYM" key. I've only just found this out and it REALLY helps when trying to edit a URL or something that isn't a real word.

I've been in the beta for a while on the San Fran. The beta doesn't have Uk english though. :)

It should add the word automatically, you just need to type it out once, and then you should be able to swype it.

Also after typing any word, swype from the SWYPE key to the Shift key to change the capitalisation of the previous word - you'll get a popup with options for all uppercase, all lowercase, or initial letter in uppercase.

I'm having a problem downloading the app, i've been through the registration and activated my account - but when i navigate to the download page using my phone it tries to download the app but ends up with 'download unsuccessful' - im using the default browser on Paul's 2.1 R4.

Why does it collect so much info? (access to phone calls) gives you a warning that whatever you type (even passwords) will be send to them etc...

You get that warning on all 3rd party keyboards I think. It doesn't mean swype have said they will, it means android is telling you that the app has the permissions necessary to do so. I don't know about the phone calls thing.

This has been bothering me too. Because it is implied that Swype are seeing what you type to help them make the beta. That would be a total no no.

Although this isn't from the Market, I think in the future Android devs (Google) are really gonna have to tighten up policies about apps and data, because a lot of apps are just getting too much data. Mobile vendors are seeing the platform as a free-for-all of data gathering. As if all the hard work to stop that on the Desktop suddenly doesn't matter or apply here. And it is shocking. Google are at the forefront of this.

We need good apps, hacks and of course Roms to really to stop all phoning home (or third parties) with things like phone ID, number etc. That there isn't even one proper cookie-killer app on android says there's a lot of growing up to do here.

Devs have got to STOP hard writing in Google as a trusted 'norm'. It isn't.

We need browsers totally without GOOGLE ANYWHERE IN IT AT ALL... That you can't turn off the Google-suggest-as-you-type in the default browser is concerning.

Swype itself:

I've been very used to TouchPal which I think is very good and I kind of miss it with Swype. But Swype is a very cool and clever input method.

Frankly I think the keyboard itself is a little tacky and naff looking. Design-wise isn't quite there (devs just copy Apple) but it's functional, quick and fun and intuitive.

The ideal for me would be a mixture of Swype and TouchPal with the look of the standard Android keyboard.
