Guest MaxiP Posted December 21, 2010 Report Posted December 21, 2010 (edited) My Vega is here but I'm not allowed to play with it until Christmas day - something to do with it being a present or something.... Anyway, in preparation for playing with it, I'm compiling a list of things to do, where to do them from, apps to install, etc. I'd welcome any comments on the steps up to the Apps section and in particular, whether or not ClockWorkMod is required / advised. To do; Connect Vega to PC (Windows 7 x64) Install updated USB drivers (from MCR pack) Update Vega to newest official ROM - download here; when installing, switch the Vega into APX (key combo of Back & Power buttons). Enable USB Debugging Install MCR & performance pack - bake & download from here Install / tweak for USB host (instructions here) To think about doing; Change boot screen (instructions here) Change wallpaper Remap buttons [perhaps] (Instructions here) Install alternative keyboard / Launcher App Install ClockworkMod recovery & Nandroid backup [optional ???] downloaded from here Install Apps....... Anything else I've missed ? TIA edit - updated sequence following comments edit - step by step instructions here thanks to rvdgeer Edited December 22, 2010 by MaxiP
Guest trevor432990 Posted December 21, 2010 Report Posted December 21, 2010 Good idea having such a list but I think you should consider it a 'wish list' rather than a 'to do' list as the reality of implementing the different steps may make you pause before the next step and consider very carefully if you really need to carry out the next stage. I speak from experience and will wait to see if anyone else echos my views :)

Steep learning curve for people who haven't used android before for sure, we've all been there- take your time and follow guides to the tee or you'll end up with problems lol.
Guest AndyCr15 Posted December 21, 2010 Report Posted December 21, 2010 (edited) I feel like a bit of a n00b, but I enabled USB debugging, but the PC wont update the Vega as it says its not connected. When I go to manage devices, there are no problems. Where will I find the Vega to reinstall USB drivers? For that matter, where are the USB drivers?!?! Thanks for any help. :) **EDIT** Scratch that, it's listed as 'NVIDIA Tegra 2 USB Device' (but the updater doesn't recognise it) So I guess I need to know where to find the drivers now and I can switch them over? **EDIT2** Okay, I just need to be a bit more patient. They're in r5 right... Edited December 21, 2010 by AndyCr15
Guest AndyCr15 Posted December 21, 2010 Report Posted December 21, 2010 Okay, I wont edit again, it's getting silly! How can I force these USB drivers? I have a NVIDIA Tegra 2 USB Device listed but if I select that and give it the new drivers, it just says they aren't drivers for this device? (Win 7 64 bit) Do I have to boot in safe mode to force them on or something? :)

I believe that some people have had better luck with the Advent site. http://www.myadventvega.co.uk/SystemUSB.zip
Guest lnux9898 Posted December 21, 2010 Report Posted December 21, 2010 @MaxIP, I would do a mixture of To-do and Wish List. For the To-do list, I would add: - To install the 1.06.5 system ROM, switch the Vega into APX (key combo of Back & Power buttons). - Switch the order of: + Install MCR & performance pack - bake & download from here + Install ClockworkMod recovery & Nandroid backup [optional ???] downloaded from here - Install the Recovery app Wish list: - Install another keyboard - the default one is not ideal - Install a Launcher app - Launcher Pro, ADW Launcher, Go, etc.

I believe that some people have had better luck with the Advent site. http://www.myadventvega.co.uk/SystemUSB.zip not me. have a POV too and i have tried a lot of ways, even with XP. only worked once to install 1.07 POV oficial version and i am trying again to use XP to install vega's rom but without success. i think Advent, POV, Gtab etc should do something about usb drivers because a lot of people have problems, more often using windows 7 64bits version. i have tried installing POV official usb drivers (vega too but are the same), android_tegra_froyo_20101105 DK Nvidia official drivers, paul's MCR drivers...... maybe i am missing other ones...... so if someones have otheer to have a try :)

Guest warriorscot Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 I would do clockwork mod last if at all, is the most risky thing of the lot to do and not really need all that much in my opinion. Its certainly useful but you can certainly live with out it and its the most likely to brick the vega of any of the things you can do to it. Its on my list of "things to install as needed not just because" for that reason. Also leave the USB host to last as most of the other steps need it in slave mode anyway and while it can switch between the two with gscript you are going to be quicker just doing that last. Definitely remap the keys I did it and haven't regretted it makes life so much easier. If you are playing music or watching a video the player will have a volume control and I have extended controls widgets on all my home screens that allow me to access the volume and/or mute the vega so I don't miss the hardware volume controls.

Clockwork install is easy, and nandroid is good to have to restore everything as it was, wouldn't mind having Amon_RA recovery though as i think thats a little bit better at flashing files then clockwork. but we cant have it all.
Guest AndyCr15 Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 Surely you need clockworkmod to flash a custom ROM?
Guest arad85 Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 A significant number of people have had black screen boots with Clockwork installed. Unless it has been upgraded and bugs fixed (not seen any posts which suggest this, but willing to be pointed in the right direction :)), I'd avoid it for the moment.
Guest gingercat Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 Surely you need clockworkmod to flash a custom ROM? Check out the custom ROM sticky for instructions on flashing. No Clockworkmod required.
