Guest tdroza Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 Hi all, I'm having trouble with Google Reader in the Vega's browser... If I access the full desktop site at http://reader.google.com the page initially displays fine, but I can't scroll and none of the links work. If I access the mobile site at http://m.google.com/reader it must detect that the Vega's browser is not a mobile browser so it just displays a promo page telling me to visit the site from my mobile device. Ideally with a screen as big as the Vega's I'd prefer to use the full desktop site, but getting either of them to work would be a start. Has anyone else seen these issues or found a fix? PS: I know there are seval Google Reader apps available - the official one doesn't display full screen when you display a feed article, and I've just installed NewsRob to try out but I like the website.
Guest English Haze Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 I sometimes find that web pages won't initially scroll but a quick pinch and squeeze to resize it and they move. This happened for me on the Google Reader site last night.
Guest TeaTimeSoon Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 I suspect the browser user agent needs to be changed. It should report the screen size and Google will automagically send a web page conforming to the right dimensions. Need to check to see if this is user changeable. On my desktop, using Chrome, I can set a user agent to be the Galaxy tab and Reader displays perfectly (same pixel resolution as the Vega). Will be back when I have tried it out. J
Guest sipart Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 I can recommend gReader (free) by noinnion in the Market I've tried loads of RSS readers the above is the best IMHO. Articles (that have full text) display perfectly landscape and portrait.
Guest wipeout140 Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 I would also recommend NewsRob - an excellent rss application for HTC Magic and Advent Vega Also appeared in app of the day here at MoDaCo
Guest battletank Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 I would also recommend NewsRob - an excellent rss application for HTC Magic and Advent Vega Also appeared in app of the day here at MoDaCo Adding to the list of recommendations, Pulse is a beautiful visual cross-platform news-reader that really takes advantage of the Vega's screen size and touch interface. It can import from Google Reader.
Guest TeaTimeSoon Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 OK - the user agent is available - go into browser settings, scroll to the bottom and select the UA option. If you choose Desktop or iPhone then Reader works fine with no issues of invisible sections of the page (unless you pinch to zoom in - which is a pain). In fact, I rather like the alternative layout given if iPhone is selected (it changes Gmail to the alternative iPhone/iPad interface as well). This works better with a touch interface IMHO. Cheers J

I can't find the setting you described though... - I open the browser, select Menu > More > Settings - The list of settings is split into Page Content, Privacy, Security, Advanced. - I can't find a UA option in any of those sections. Am I looking in the right place?

Guest tdroza Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 Type about:debug in the URL line first, before opening your settings menu :) Great, thanks. Desktop still didnt work (there's JS code on the page which handles the page scroll event to mark posts as read etc, and I guess it's not recognising the scroll action from the touch screen). Got it working with iPhone UA though. Shame we can't set the UserAgent for individual sites though.

What I found was setting it to iPhone, visiting the mobile sites, then switching it back to Android seemed to do this, when I went back to those sites, it used m.google.reader for example.. Not sure if it would switch back later..
