Guest trevor432990 Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 I expect like a lot of people here I am new to the Android OS and working with tablets but through the co-operation and good advice I've got from this forum I've managed to download and install every mod (apart from Clockwork which I've deferred) that has come out. With this background in mind I would like to ask those more experienced than myself what is the best way of backing up and restoring the Vega to full operational use should something go wrong at any point? I don't believe anyone has written a guide to this yet but it is something which I guess any new Vega owner would like have available to them just in case. I've downloaded and run Titanium Backup which as I understand it backs up the apps but what I don't know is how to backup the OS, data and settings I've added to the device. Ideally I would like a way of mirroring the entire machine onto say a PC or connected USB hard drive and a method of restoring the same if required. Is that possible?

Not sure I fully understand what your asking ............. I'm guessing your wanting to backup an .img of you Vega like you can do on your PC ? I'm not sure there is anything in existance that will do this, if there is I don't know of it. Anyway as for backing up and restoring your apps and settings, have you tried the stock backup/restore app on the Vega. Its what I'm using and it works pretty well, I even make a backup of my backup file and send it to my drop box (just in case)
Guest Higgsy Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 (edited) maybe I should elaborate. nandroid creates an exact image of your device so when you restore it is exactly how it was when you made the recovery The only problem with Clockworkmod recovery is that its a bootstrap recovery. On some devices you can install the recovery so it is accessible from boot, ie you are replacing the original recovery of the device with a custom one - This is the best way to do it. If the recovery is locked down and this is not possible you use the bootstrap method, where you reboot the phone (tablet in this instance lol) into the recovery image. This is all very well but the problem arises it you get into a bootloop or something and can't get access to the device in the normal way. In this instance, you would basically have to reflash the device with the stock firmware, reinstall the recovery and then restore your back up. Its a little long winded but at the end of the day you are back to exactly the way you were when youmade the back up. Put it this way on my defy I have done this like 50 times after tinkering around, I can now reflash the device and restore back up in like 15 mins! Edited December 23, 2010 by Higgsy

Well I'm glad you did expand on your original reply. Nandroid would seem the simplest solution is that an app cos I can't see it on Market?

Nandroid would seem the simplest solution is that an app cos I can't see it on Market? no when you make a make a backup by the clockworkmod recovery it creates a nandroid backup, its not an app available on the market. The nandroid backup is saved to you sdcard - when you choose to restore this (again on the recovery) it will list any backups you have done that are on your sd card, so you can even keep various custom roms in nandroid rom and switch between them as and when
Guest trevor432990 Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 Ah I see. I shall check Clockwork mode out then though your description of it sounds a little scarey :)
Guest Higgsy Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 Ah I see. I shall check Clockwork mode out then though your description of it sounds a little scarey :) its easy peasy mate don't be scared its the way forward! when you boot into clockworkmod you will get a screen like this, you basically use up/down to slect the option you want. At the end of the day you will have to install this as paul says r7 is going to be a customer from - ie you will flash it from clockworkmod.
Guest trevor432990 Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 Looks a bit techy to me but hey I've got this far so in for a penny. Thanks Higgsy and Debs for your inputs but if someone else knows of a super dooper does everything method please jump in.

There isn't one if you can install r5 then you can follow the instructions to install the recovery
Guest rvdgeer Posted December 24, 2010 Report Posted December 24, 2010 There isn't one if you can install r5 then you can follow the instructions to install the recovery If all you really want to backup is apps + data and settings, you should go for Titanium Backup (Pro)... Otherwise, if you want to create a (ghost like) image of your system, you need clockworkmod to make a nandroid backup, like Higsy said... Just do some reading before, so you know what you're doing... It's not scary at all if you follow the instructions and use common sense :(
Guest jellywobbles Posted December 24, 2010 Report Posted December 24, 2010 ...... I even make a backup of my backup file and send it to my drop box (just in case) :( Had to smile when I read this - I do just the same! I dont think I could go through a day without accessing my DropBox at some time or other! ;)
