Guest bigdan35 Posted December 26, 2010 Report Posted December 26, 2010 Hello, I've been playing around with the HTC Desire for a long time, so I don't really class myself as a newbie to this area, but with Samsung, it's rather different. In August I flashed some firmware on to the phone via Odin, and now it's started to mess up. The phone DOES NOT get recognised by the PC (I've tried 1 PC, and 3 Laptops which have XP, Vista and 2 Windows 7 respectively). When I plug in the USB in to the Computer, the options for "Charging Only, Mass Storage..." etc doesn't come up, so there is definitely something up and it's starting to get quite annoying indeed. I've tried to reflash with Odin when in Download mode, the PC doesn't recognise the phone, I've tried everything within USB Debug Mode and Normal Mode, nothing. I've tried to flash Clockworkmod Recovery via ROM Manager and also nothing. I've factory reset the phone and it still doesn't register with the computer. I've tried various USB Cables, also that makes no difference whatsoever. So to reiterate.. USB DOES NOT GET REGISTERED, no matter what I try, just comes up with "Unknown Device" and I've installed all drivers, via Kies and otherwise. Any help please? Dan

Dan Hi Dan, What firmware did you flash to the phone back in August? The first thing I would suggest, is to do a data wipe/factory reset. DO NOT use the factory data reset through Menu>settings>Privacy>Factory data reset as this doesn't clear out the old OS properly, instead you will need to do it through recovery mode, if you don't know how to do this follow this: First make sure your phone can use the 3 button combo mode, recovery/download mode, some galaxy s had this disabled by samsung. Press Volume up, home button and power button all at the same time, keep them pressed until you see the start up screen with the flashing S, release the power button but keep the others pressed. When you get to a screen with a lot of coloured text release the other 2 buttons. At the top of the screen you should see some text in blue, look for data wipe/factory reset, use the volume up/down to navigate to data wipe/factory reset, then use the home button to ok the action. Make sure you back up your contacts, memos, photos, music ect as doing this will wipe all your data. It is recommended to do this after any firmware update. This also sorts out most of the problems you will get from your SGS Make sure you have the very latest version of kies and then check to see if you can connect to kies, before you do this put you phone into ask on connection. If you phone doesn't get recognised by kies it is possible it is the drivers, so go to the top left in kies, where it says kies, left click and in the drop down box select driver recovery, let it do it's thing and then try and connect your phone. If none of this works you may need to uninstall kies from you PC and also in the registry, you will have to look around in there as the are a lot of places it gets installed to. I hope your not using a 64bit OS, there are numerous post about problems with kies and windows 64bit
Guest bigdan35 Posted December 26, 2010 Report Posted December 26, 2010 Cheers for the reply mate, much appreciated. Done all of that already, unfortunately. I've tried it again and to no avail whatsoever. I think I'm just going to smash it up and claim on the insurance, then they won't check the Firmware on it or anything! The firmware I'm not sure about at the moment, but I know it's Froyo.. I don't have the phone in my posession at the moment, my cousin has it so I'll come back to you at a later date. It did originally work perfectly, but I think he's messed around with something. I've also used 32bit Windows 7, 64 Bit Windows 7, and 32 bit Windows XP and 64 bit Windows 7, all absolutely nothing. Fantastic way to spend Christmas day, sorting out a phone which I can't be bothered with!

There is a firmware that didn't connect to kies at all and that is JPX, but this is a later firmware. Are you able to connect via odin? if you can then all is not lost. Can you get into recovery mode? Just a thought, the standard launcher is TWlauncher, if you have installed something like Launcher Pro or ADW Launcher or any other third party launcher, this will stop the phone from connecting to kies, so you will need to return to TWLauncher. Have you installed a lagfix, if so try disabling/removing it. Edited December 27, 2010 by richardj

No I cannot connect via odin / download mode, but I can access recovery, the android recovery which is good! I also only have TWlauncher and lagfix isn't on it :(. Hope that helps

Hope that helps If you can get into recovery mode on the phone, that's good. So we'll start there. I know you said you have done this but try again, as follows: Press and hold the following keys in this order Volume up, home key and power button. Release power button only when phone gets to the boot screen, big flashing S Keep volume up and home key pressed. When phone gets to a screen with lots of coloured text, release the volume up and home keys. At the top of the display there should be some blue text, look for data wipe/factory reset, use the volume up/down to navigate to it. Use the home key to OK the action, this will then take you to another screen, at the top will be more blue text with a lot of NO's and in the middle will be a YES, navigate to YES with volume up/down keys and then press the home key to OK the selection. I'm not saying this will help but it is worth a try. I think you said your cousin has been messing with the phone, it would be good to know what he/she has done? It would be better if you PM me from now on.
