Reception zero bars or no signal

Just got a new San Fran for Christmas... I suspect it's faulty, though. It's getting either no signal or one bar, no matter where I try it in my house. And when I put it next to my wife's 2-yr old Samsung, that shows 4-5 bars of signal. She's on Virgin, which I understand to use the same network (Everything Everywhere, T-mobile and Orange).

There's nothing I'm missing is there? I just take it back to the shop and get a new one? (They're not allowed to palm me off with a reconditioned one, are they?)

Cheers,

peejay

Afaik the orange sims won't roam onto T-mobiles network until you goto http://www.orange.co.uk/share and enter your number to enable it.

Then if the orange reception is bad your phone should be able to switch to t-mobile, but it only works for 2G and not 3G currently.

Thanks - did this, no change. Still no reception. And I checked the Orange coverage checker, which says I should have excellent reception. OK, so my phone's definitely faulty and I'll be taking it back.

unlock your device for free

unlocking does not void your warranty. if you already done this try your wife's sim card in the device. same problem? try another sim card like O2 lol

just make sure its the phone. try another location i.e. outside your house or area. if signal improves then it isn't the phone. if it is the phone then i think you have 7 days to return it for that but your stationary rights are not effect blah blah blah

On mine it defaulted at Network mode 'automatic' I checked use only 2G/GSM and found my signal issues were because it was using 3G if it was available even if 2G was a stronger signal. May not be the case here but worth a shout!

Here's an update...

On El Nino9's advice, I unlocked the phone. On my new network, reception was slightly better, so I assumed it was Orange coverage rather than the phone. But it still wasn't great. In fact it was failing to find a signal at quite a few locations. To double check I put the Orange SIM into my old phone, and it was picking up a pretty good signal.

So this all pointed to the phone being faulty.

I took it back to the shop, and it helpfully showed no signal at all there - so they agreed it was faulty, and will put aside a new one for me when they get a delivery. They still haven't had a delivery yet, so my Christmas present still isn't working! Hopefully I'll get a replacement at the weekend.
