Hi,

I notice VGA recording ability for the video camera is enabled in some ROM's but not Pauls R4 one.

Can i not manually enable it by altering a file to enable it in paul r4 rom?, or is it kernel based or codec based and absent from pauls r4 rom?

Cheers

You could always try replacing the Camera.apk file in Paul's Froyo A4 with the one in the new releases by Sebastian404 and kalt_kaffe

Select video quality/length as "custom" in the camcorder programme, then go to the other onscreen options(the one at the top/right) dependant on how you hold the phone, and then go through those options to enable VGA, effects, mpeg4, audio, etc..

It works on R3, and can't see it being removed for R4.

It works the same in the "new" froyo roms too, i just never used the camcorder in paul's version, but also never thought someone wouldn't try out the custom options. Ofcourse the default "profiles" of the camera app limit the resolution, video and audio codec, so not anything is selectable until you choose the custom option.

Thanks guys, what a dummy i am LOL. As 'rottenfoxbreath' said it was under custom settings :(

Does VGA, CIF, QVGA make much difference to the quality?, as i presume the cmos/lens is poor?

Cheers

Well, the higher resolution definitely helps quality, and the only problem with the sensor is it needs adequate lighting for good pictures. Also i've seen a topic here about removing the back cover to take pictures, because it seems the lens that is part of the back cover is very low quality, and also "eats" light that would indeed help in low-light situations. Lets hope the chinese aftermarket will produce some upgrade batteries and better quality back covers for it :(

So actually the video was slightly crippled for the OSF.

You've got it recording video at 640x480. Any increase in the frame rate ? It was about 12 fps if I remember.

I only tried custom setting with VGA, H264 and AAC sound, and my media player reported varying framerate from 12 to 25... but the playpack seems smooth enough, i would say the sensor in the phone is much slower (not really suitable for high framerate videos) than the MSM7227 CPU could support, it is VGA but then again, you will not shot near-DVD quality videos ever with this phone, but given the price tag it was never meant to be...

I can confirm VGA vs CIF, VGA is better it isnt as blocky and slightly sharper. H264 also is better than MPEG4.

I looked this up and its 640x480 res as opposed to 352x288, as far as frame rate goes it doesnt seem any worse.

The addition of VGA has made my experience and happiness increase with the OSF.
