downloading apps on market

Firstly like to say hi to one and all,

Just got my son a san fransisco for xmas and he's unable to download from the market, it just stays there saying starting download.

was thinking of getting myself one of these phones but not so sure now.

have googled for answers and no matter what i've tried no luck.

have been reading posts on here about flashing and that and you certainly know what you're on about so any ideas?
