Guest NightSt@lk3r Posted December 27, 2010 Report Posted December 27, 2010 I don't see why wifi not reconnecting is such a big issue TBH, if you want your battery to last you should be switching Wifi off when you don't need it anyway.
Guest Magnets Posted December 27, 2010 Report Posted December 27, 2010 Fairly certain I've already tried wifibuddy and from what I've read, no app will be able to "fix" the problem, only workarounds (reconnect on wake, or keep a partial wake lock on).

I agree though i forgot to mention it to my sister who got a new SF and its been eating her credit using 3g when she thought it was wi-fi
Guest oiltrader Posted December 28, 2010 Report Posted December 28, 2010 I agree though i forgot to mention it to my sister who got a new SF and its been eating her credit using 3g when she thought it was wi-fi I made a very stupid mistake. So I had the £10 inclusive Orange credit. I had Blade Wifi Fix to restart the wifi everytime the phone came out of standby. I also had apps like BBC news, and weather apps. Both these apps have automatic updates every 1 hour. It also updates when the phone is in standby mode. So I basically used up my £10 credit. LOL. Word of warning to others relying on the wifi restarter on wakeup as some of your apps still use data when phone is in standby. Luckily I only lost £10 and its not my main phone.

Turn off background data transfer. Also, try the orange canary PAYG plan.
Guest Gerson2k Posted December 28, 2010 Report Posted December 28, 2010 As has already been mentioned, there is no known fix as yet, but only work arounds - to which WiFi buddy is one of.
Guest fonix232 Posted December 28, 2010 Report Posted December 28, 2010 (edited) Actually, the new Hungarian firmware's main bootloader (not boot.img) fixed it, so if you set the "Wifi sleep policy" to NEVER, it will not sleep :( Two little problem though: - you need to re-set this option, as it is on NEVER by factory but WILL NOT WORK - It will disconnect from wifi when screen unlocked (and only then), and instantly reconnect. Not surprisingly, this works for the Swedish ZTE Blade, as well, in the Wifi Advanced menu. Is it perhaps caused by an updated bootloader in both versions of the phone? Is there any way I could find out, in that case? Edited December 28, 2010 by Ace Faith

So it works as originally intended, but the only bug is that it disconnects/reconnects when you wake the phone back up? (unlock lock screen)

I have been given a San Francisco for Christmas and the WiFi has worked really well, except for one time when I had to re-set the Netgear. Other than that, it works everytime I switch on WiFi, either connected to the main router or from the plug-in Netgear extension upstairs. All in all I'm pleased with it - my first smart phone, although I think the instruction booklet if a bit sparse. If you have never used an android phone before you do really need everything explained to you. For instance it is not much help in copying music from a PC to the SF, using the instruction 'Once that's done...' Thank goodness for Modaco. Perry
Guest insurgente Posted December 29, 2010 Report Posted December 29, 2010 has anyone used "blade wifi fix" from the market? I'm going to try it out now....but if it's 'solution' is to stop the phone going in to sleep and rinsing my battery, I may have to chuck it

It automates a wifi off then on cycle on wake-up, if wifi has gone 'dormant'.

How could this be put into 512MB phones that don't require the fix provided by ZTE/T-mobile Hungary?

Are you sure it's the bootloader that has fixed this rather than the other changes included in the update such as system.img? has anyone tried system.img and boot.img on their phone without applying the rest of the update to see if the wifi is improved?

I just did the full process on my UK 512MB OLED OSF, reflashed clockwork and reverted from the hungarian rom to my backup. Toggled the WiFi sleep policy like suggested and let my phone fall asleep. I verified that sleep was of the deep variety by pressing home, menu and back with no response. I'm now in my routers config area monitoring and so far my OSFs MAC address hasn't dropped from the connected devices list (about 15 mins so far). I think that if this proves successful that it is infact in the bootloader and not in system.img or boot.img. I'll report back any changes, because it would be great to have the wifi never sleep working correctly than using a market app that is probably much harder on the battery life.

Guest jt_mcg Posted December 29, 2010 Report Posted December 29, 2010 Excellent report from a trained observer! :( Thanks ;) Unfortunately it seems that the WiFi has now dropped, now I wish that I would have verified a correct implementation while still on the Hungarian firmware. I'm guessing that Fonix232 wasn't on the stock Hungarian ROM though.... I'm quite confused at what could have fixed that, I'm no Android or Mobile device expert but this isn't my first trip around the block. I'm unlikely to learn enough in a reasonable time frame to figure this out ;) So hopefully my experience with both the upgrade process on a 512MB device and my explanations can prove helpful to all those who can use the knowledge for our evil purposes!
Guest jt_mcg Posted December 29, 2010 Report Posted December 29, 2010 (edited) Woke the phone, WiFi had disconnected but reconnected immediately. Went to wifi sleep policy and toggled to select "never" again, now sleeping and we'll see how it goes. Manual refresh of the active device list FTW! Will report back again. Update: dropped almost immediately this time, not sure what else I can do... Any suggestions from the experts? any desire for a dump of an OSF that's been through the Hungarian Update process? Guest samjam Posted December 29, 2010 Report Posted December 29, 2010 How sure are you still that it was fixed in the hungarian rom?

One gotcha to beware of is that the 'connected devices' may actually be the DHCP leases rather than devices that are currently being communicated with (and, for example, in-range!) It would be nice to have a report of distinctly different behaviour when a different sleep policy was selected on the phone (like wifi sleep when screen sleeps -- when the router should hopefully show the device disappearing promptly).

It would be nice to have a report of distinctly different behaviour when a different sleep policy was selected on the phone (like wifi sleep when screen sleeps -- when the router should hopefully show the device disappearing promptly). My router shows DHCP leases and whether the device is currently active or inactive. I may have overestimated the length of time that it remained connected on my first test, but it was longer than normal. It dropped near immediately on the second test. I'd like to know what ROM fonox232 was on, If he remained on the hungarian 2.1 that was installed than it could certainly be in boot.img or system.img. I'm also wondering if I had done a fresh install of my current rom rather than restoring a back up would have made a difference. I'll ponder over dinner whether it's worth trying again and possibly go for it if fonix was not on the new Hungarian stock rom when the policy was observed to have been changed and still hasn't had any disconnects after moving to a Custom ROM.
Guest Arr Too Posted December 29, 2010 Report Posted December 29, 2010 The files in the Hungarian Hedgehog /system/wifi provided seemingly very quick connections compared to other setups I tried. And I also noticed that the SAPO ROM came with wireless sleep set to Never out of the box (and seemed to stay connected, too, but I didn't investigate thoroughly).
Guest rjm2k Posted December 29, 2010 Report Posted December 29, 2010 easiest way to check is ping your phone from another device, on mine with blade wifi fix and wifi keepalive the ping dies as soon as I lock the phone by hitting the power button
