ClockworkMod Backup/Restore Issue

Hi, I had a problem with a backup & subsequent recovery last night and wondered if someone could tell me if I did something wrong or if my understanding of how it should work is wrong.

Firstly, I'm using ClockworkMod 2.5.0.9 and running Sebastian404's r7 de-orangeated ROM on my TFT San Francisco.

Last night I wanted to give one of the new 2.2 releases a try so I did a full backup first. To do this I booted up with the Vol down pressed and then, at the Clockwork Recovery v2.5.0.9 menu, selected "backup and restore". Then at the Nandroid menu I selected "Backup". This then went through the backup process and created a folder on the SD card /clockworkmod/backup/2010-12-27.22.43.26 with the following files inside:

boot.img

cache.img

data.img

nandroid.md5

recovery.img

system.img

So then I wiped the data & cache and loaded the 2.2 and had a play and then later I wanted to restore it back to 2.1 from the backup. So I once again I went into Clockwork recovery, wiped the data & cache and then selected "backup and restore" and then "restore" and selected the "2010-12-27.22.43.26/" entry. This then went through the restore process and then said completed.

However, when I rebooted the phone it wasn't restored to the same state as when the backup was created. A lot of my apps were missing, widgets were missing, the wallpaper was different, WiFi WEP keys were no longer setup and APN settings were no longer setup. There wasn't even an Android Market icon in the applications list so I couldn't download any of the missing apps.

So, what I would like to know is if I did something wrong, is my assumption that it would be restored to it's previous state completely wrong or did something just go wrong on this occasion and I was unlucky.

I know the SD card didn't have an awfull lot of space on it but I assumed that if there wasn't enough space for the backup then it would have given an error during the backup process. Perhaps this assumption was wrong as well.

The trouble is that now I am a bit reluctant to have a tinker with new firmware just in case the backup doesn't restore properly & I have to spend ages setting it all back up again after restoring. So I'm hoping that there is a good reason that this happened and please tell me if I've been a complete bozo and done it all wrong because then at least I'll know why it did not work.

Many thanks

Russell

I would surely like to have this question answered. I also want to do a backup of my current ROM and state.

Also, is it possible to make backups of several ROMs, and "go to each one of them" as desired? Or only one at the time?

Finally, are there any precautions needed to make when going from one backup to another? Suppose I'm at backup one. Do I need to do something to go to backup 2? And once I'm at backup 2, do I need to do anything special to go to backup 1? :(

Use ClockworkMod to create and restore backups of the full state of your phone. Once a backup is made you can rename the dated directory (which can be found in the "clockworkmod" directory on your SD card) to something more memorable (add the ROM name, for example). Then when you use ClockworkMod to restore you'll see the prettier name, rather than just a list of dates.

Arr Too; i've done as you've said (change folder name to something more memorable), and i'm getting an MD5 mismatch when i try to restore a backup.

i've double checked the md5's of what clockwork thinks it is, and what the file actually are; they are md5 correct.

to the OP; did you wipe any data in clockwork AFTER restoring? this may explain why stuff aint working as you expect - you've wiped the user customizations back to your chosen rom...

How odd! Iit's always worked fine for me (in 2.5.0.9). Do you still get MD5 errors if you put the directory name back to what it was before? If not, try again but this time make the directory name shorter (something simple like just "xyz" to start with).

Make sure you don't have any spaces or other characters in the dirname

No, I wiped the data/cache before the restore.

So, it would appear then that something just went wrong on this occasion.

So, just to clarify, if I do a backup and then later restore that backup, then the phone should be in the same state as when the backup was created, same wallpaper, same apps, wep keys etc still setup, launcherPro still running etc, etc, etc. Am I right in this assumption.

Many thanks

instead of hi-jacking, i've put my findings in the clockwork sticky/pinned thread. basically down to brackets being used (non-standard foldername).

@RussellS - yep, something funky went on with that backup/restore.

i've restored multiple times today (playing around with the UOT Kitchen), and everytime its been working fine; wallpaper, desktop icon locations, wifi key etc.

i'd delete the data from sdcard\clockwork\[date/timestamp]\ folder and start again.

Thanks for clarifying that. I can now go back to playing around with some 2.2 releases again safe in the knowledge I can easily go back to where I am now.

Thanks again

I renamed my original clockwork mod file by deleting the time stamp (example 12.12.12) an added "original" at the end. Unfortunately, I did this through the file explorer and not ROM manager (before I read) and now when I try to restore it I get a md5 sum error. Is there anyway to find the original time stamp in the files so I can rename it correctly? Or am I screwed?

have you got a space in the dirname? or any other 'odd' character?

Just out of interest, when doing a backup and it has done boot, recovery, system, data, .android_secure and cache it says "No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sd-ext." what does this mean and is it ok.

EDIT: It's alright, I've just realised. Is it if you have your SD card partitioned to put apps on the SD card either with Froyo or with app2sd on 2.1.

It's fine -- it's looking for an optional part (apps stored on the SD card) and you don't have this so it's skipped it.

NO i just names it 2010-11-24-original and still nothing
