3G video telephony with the ZTE Blade / OSF?

I have asked in this thread, if UMTS/3G video telephony (which is a provider service, and has nothing to do with ordinary video calls over the internet, like with Fring or Tango) can be done with an Android mobile, and got the following answer:

Doing 3G video telephony is something that can only be done if the handset vendor added it actively to the Android device.

The vendor needs to modify the RIL daemon that comes with the basic Android and muck around the Telephony Manager to begin with.

I've written a whitepaper in the past on what else is required - you can download it here: http://www.radvision.com/Resources/Develop...integration.htm

There are several Android phones that support 3G video telephony - the Samsung Galaxy S is one of them, but there is no app you can download, and I don't think there can be from a technical viewpoint.

Any idea, if this can be done with the ZTE Blade / OSF, maybe if someone with the proper knowledge takes a look, how it is done with the Samsung Galaxy S?

Is the ZTE Blade / OSF sold by any provider, that supports 3G video telephony?

The ZTE Blade is such a fabulous device for that price, but when I purchased mine, I completely forgot, that I need to be able to access my Pupillos (which are 3G video cameras once offered by Hutchison 3G), which is just not possible now with my ZTE Blade.

IF it had a front camera it might be possible but it doesn't

What's honeycomb?

The phone only has a camera on the back, there isn't a front facing camera, so even if it was possible you wouldn't both be able to see each other. So it wouldn't be much use for most people.

HHoneycomb is the next codename for the future Android version, just like Eclair or Gingerbread. You can try Tango or Fring, the other person has to have the same program, they should work. I will try this with my wife when we have time. I have tried Qik but it works only to stream live to a site and your friends can look at that site to see your stream, not really good. I have also tried Yahoo Messenger on 2.2 to a laptop, I could see the laptop's camera but the laptop did not see mine, it has also reset my SanFran 2 or three times when initializing. The voice did come through very well though.

Not very useful for our blades which are still officially stuck on 2.1.

AFAIK at the moment the only way would be software like fring over IP may be able to do this, but as pointed out already we only have a camera on the back so whilst the other person can see you , you can't see them or vice versa. I suppose you could use a mirror. Any reason why you want 3G specifically rather than IP?

The poster did explain they had to be 3G video calls (as opposed to internet telephony) to access his Pupillos (which are like webcams that connect using 3g video calls). I know my provider gives me 25mins of video calls every month but I never use them (50p a min when they run out) - the quality of video calls that I've tried (especially cross network) has always been hit and miss (mostly using Nokia phones).

i run and a mix of 2.2 and 2.3 roms 2.4 shouldn't be to hard to port over to the blade especilly if we get.32 source but we could do it with .29 source or possibly .32 kernal without source .

Guys, as mentioned in my initial post, this is about the 3G video telephony provider service, which is a separate UMTS/3G service besides normal telephony, SMS, MMS and internet access, and has nothing to do with ordinary video telephony over the internet with software like Skype 3.0, Fring or Tango.

In my original posting in the other thread, I also pointed out, that the phone does not need a front camera to be able to use that 3G video telephony provider service:

UMTS/3G videophony is a separate service besides normal telephony, which is supported by any "normal" UMTS/3G mobile, even by devices that do not have a front-camera (like my NOKIA E61i and AMOI 3Skypephone), which will show the picture of the main camera on the backside instead then (but that can be switched off, so that the conversational partner does not see any picture).

As mentioned by Tsahi Levent-Levi in the other thread, there are several Android phones that support 3G video telephony, like the Samsung Galaxy S.

So maybe someone here is capable of taking a look, how it's done with the Samsung Galaxy S, and port the differences in the RIL daemon and the telephony app over to the ZTE Blade?

Or is there no way at all, to ever get that feature on a ZTE Blade?

I am really stuck here, because that missing feature is pretty much a show stopper for me (we have some of these Pupillos from Hutchison 3G, and without the 3G video telephony provider service, I can not access these any more). :(

ok looked at the white paper ill look at it this weekend and poibly intergrate it into a 2.3 vinila rom im planning for release in a few weeks ril is what were stuck on atm if zte released the ril source code it would be easy (as would a 2.3) but i think that its from qualcom and thus may be propiotory or apache licence if you can bug them and get it would help massively but still we would probably need the source from the sgs too or implement it ourselfs wich i have never done before

So there is hope? That would be just great!

I have no relation to ZTE, and I am not a dev, but maybe Tsahi Levent-Levi, who replied to my original thread and provided the quoted info, can help (maybe you can get in touch with him).

I find it quite strange, that such a standard feature of UMTS/3G is only supported by a minority of Android phones, whereas every other 3G mobile (reaching back to the very first 3G phones) and even the cheapest ones support the 3G video telephony provider service ootb (even my Nokia E61i and Amoi 3Skyephone, which both have no front camera).
