Guest Sir Gash Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 (edited) My Vega is currently in a very bad state. If I now reboot it I get the 'Black Screen of Death' every time. I was wondering if it is possible to hack the official Vega ROM download to just update the recovery image and not touch the system. If you download and extract 'softwareImage_v1.06_05_Vega_Final.exe' to a folder, I can see the batch file that is run (lvds.bat) and the config file 'flash.cfg' which contains all the partition/file information. I was thinking of removing the 'system.img' part but I am bit worried that messing around with this could truly brick the Vega. The reason why I want to do this is because after attempting to update to MCR+PP R6, the last step is a reboot and that is when I get the BSOD. I know it is ClockworkMod causing this but I want to do a nandroid restore of my current system, revert to stock recovery and then install R6 if possible. If anyone with any insight on how nvflash works, it will be greatly appreciated as I am now unable to restart or power off my Vega without risking another BSOD. Prior to attempting the install of R6, I only had one BSOD and ClockworkMod was working well for me but since R6 (first dodgy release) I have not managed to reboot successfully using any method. Cheers! Edited December 30, 2010 by Sir Gash

Guest simonta Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 (edited) The bsod caused by cwm should not stop you getting into nvram recovery which will let you do a full flash. I was in exactly the same place a while back. Have you tried the standard recovery procedure? Have device manager open on your PC, go through the back, power, back ritual and watch for the device tree refreshing. You're looking for (from memory, might not be exact) "NVidia recovery driver". The presence of the driver, and therefore a USB connection, is the only indication that you are in recovery. The screen should remain black. If you get that, you're good to go with the full stock flash. Failing this, it IS possible to hack the stock flash but why would you want to do this? By removing system.img, you are simply reflashing boot and recovery (plus the other partitions) which a full flash will do anyway. In other words, I can see nothing to gain from hacking the flash if you're aim is to recover to stock. Good luck Edited December 30, 2010 by simonta

Guest simonta Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 Woodski. Simply use the standard stock recovery. There is a ton of information on (too many) threads here how to do that.

I have had to do it about 5 times over the last 24 hours! I just want to get back to my current ROM (currently r5) with all my apps and tweaks using a nandroid restore. I then just want to revert back to stock recovery so I can install r6 because after installing r6 the device reboots but I always get a BSOD, so my only option at this stage is to install official 1.06.5, reapply ClockworkMod recovery, install Paul's Recovery APK then do a nandroid restore. If I am able to install the stock recovery using any method, that should help my situation. I just thought that using a hacked nvflash to restore recovery will be an easy way for people to recover from a BSOD/partial-brick without going through the process of flashing the official ROM first. Guest Sir Gash Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 S sorry been working a night shift may be thick but how do i recover when pc cant see vega could you point me to some of theses comments dauther giving me a hard time If you want to recover from a BSOD (or just want to go back to stock ROM for any reason) do the following: - Download the USB Driver and Full System Image from http://www.myadventvega.co.uk/ - Plug in the power connector, it is best to have the Vega fully charged before proceeding - Plug in the USB connector - Hold down the power button for 6 seconds to ensure it is really off - Press and hold the 'Back' button - Wait 2 seconds then press and hold the 'Power' button - Wait 2 seconds then release the 'Power' button - Wait 2 seconds then release the 'Back' button Your PC should now ask to locate some drivers, point to the extracted USB driver download from myadventvega and you are then able to run the full system image. There are plenty of threads on here discussing how to do this as well as a PDF document on the above website.

Also use another PC/laptop if you can with no drivers installed or search the forums for 'vmware' and make yourself an image.

I cant give you a detailed step by step but it should certanly be possible. The thing is that if youre worried about bricking your device yu need to be extremely cautious here. If you google for the ac100 hacking site theres a little info there re using nvflash on tegra but dont just blindly follow it as someone on xda did brick a folio tablet messing with nvflash. The bat file you mention along with the other config files in the vega rom zip likely gives all the info you need but if youre worried about clockwork, i dont think this is for you. I dont know where clockwork fits into the boot process but maybe flashing the vega boot image would be enough
Guest simonta Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 Sir Gash I just tested this, but not with clockworkmod installed, but should be just the same. A nandroid backup simply creates an image copy of each partition, including system.img. AFAIK, everything you have installed and configured (with the exception of clockwork) is either in the system partition or on the sdcard. So this is how I would get rid of clockwork whilst at the same time, keeping everything intact. Simply copy system.img from your sdcard nadroid backup and replace the one in the Vega flash. Then run lvds.bat. Your sdcard is not touched by the flash, system is restored and the boot and recovery partitions are restored to stock. Good luck!

Guest Sir Gash Posted December 31, 2010 Report Posted December 31, 2010 (edited) Any news old chap? Sorry, haven't tried it yet. When I got home last night I tried installing r6 again (6th attempt!) and it installed and rebooted without a BSOD and my Vega seems stable again (rebooted, powered off, switched USB modes several times). For this reason, I am holding off on testing nvflash with a nandroid system.img for the time being, at least until I get another BSOD! If I do, I will test this method and post an update. Cheers Edited December 31, 2010 by Sir Gash
