Do I really need gmail and e-mail app?

I'm currently using the Modaco Custom 2.2 Froyo ROM Alpha3 rom and I love it despite some minor niggles like the low storage which kept stopping me getting my SMS's!

I've discovered that the e-mail app is taking up all the storage space - When I delete the data and reboot it normally fixes the low storage problem.

But upon rebooting I realised that I have both e-mail and gmail apps.

Can I uninstall one or the other and which one is everyone else using?

I normally use my gmail account on both.

You can just use one, but it depends on your email domains as to which is best. If you use either 1 or more gmail accounts then just use gmail, if you use any other email types then you need to use the standard email client as it supports more than just gmail. However it's worth bearing in mind that gmail is push, and the other is not, so if you care about push you need gmail, there are issues I believe in removing the gmail app too, and even if you did it wouldn't save you space, removing all data and then setting it up not to sync gmail data, however, will save a bit of space. Then just set up your other email client to fetch your gmail data if so desired. One other alternative is something like k9 mail off the market, that can support pull/push all together, either way the cache is still stored on the phone memory i think.

Just a touch confusing!

Let me explain how I would be using it and maybe you can tell me whats best.

I mainly use one gmail account only, mainly only using this to access my one and only MSN Hotmail account...

If that is the case, can I just disable the gmail app, as I quite like the notifications of the e-mail app on my phone? Is this K9 mail the best alternative out there?

Sorry, didn't mean to confuse. I imagine you would be best to go to gmail app, clear any data in there, unless of course you need the emails. Then go to settings, accounts & sync, then set your gmail to not sync email, only contacts and calendar assuming you use them. Then you can just ignore your gmail app. Then use the other email app to get your mail. K9 is about the best alternative, however I've found it runs a bit laggy on the blade since it's now got a bit bloated, and it won't help your storage issue, as its another app to add.

I'd use K9 or MailDroid. Of the 2, most people favour K9 - but they're wrong. :(

The gmail app is worth keeping though because you can use it to change your google account logon details on the phone if you ever need to. I don't know if there's any other app on the phone that can? Maybe the market? The phone itself doesn't seem to after its first setup. ;)

Hi,

I have both apps on mine and don't have any issues. Maybe I'm just a sado with no friends and don't get enough emails or it could be my set-up

Mine are set-up as imap.

In simple terms imap just looks at the emails live on the provider.

pop3 actually downloads the messages to your device.

What email protocol are you using?

K-9 fan here, apart from no widget but I have GMail, three IMAPs and a Yahoo and they work great. I backed up my Gmail app on the phone so if I do need to change the logon account for it (for contacts sync) I can.
