[Help] Some Issues.

So I unboxed my ZTE Blade/Orange Sanfran and proceeded to do the usual...

Issue 1: I put in around 20 contacts before stopping to check out the app store and add some accounts (google account) etc. I checked my contacts and now they are gone! Although they are still there in my call history and when I try and send an SMS I can select from the contacts that I entered, they are just not appearing in the contact list area. Is there anything to solve this?

Issue 2: I am still new to all this smartphone/android lark and some of this "ROM" business is all new to me, when installing new ROMs, is it possible to back up all my apps/contacts/settings etc?
