Firstly, hi & thanks in advance to anybody who can help me with this problem.

I am new to these forums but I have read many posts and tried and tried before posting for this help...so I apologise to be a pain but would really appreciate any advice.

I got a HTC Desire from fleabay and it is already rooted and set with some custom rom...

I have tried the pretty much only two ways to unroot and am having serious difficulty.

When Synched it has the following info

current system firmware: 2.09.405.8 CL218634 release-keys

it is boot version 80 as opposed to 75 or higher.

If I try the method of downloading a signed RUU and unrooting the phone I get the following...regardless of which RUU I am using (I've tried three at least)

I don't think it's related but when synchronised as I run the utility it unsynchs the phone before trying to apply the update...

Gets to restarting phone to bootloader and then

ERROR[155] UNKNOWN ERROR

The ROM Update Utility cannot update your Android phone.

Please get the correct ROM Update Utility and try again.

the phone doesn't even switch off or restart

Second method I have tried is putting a zip version of the RUU on to the SD card and going into the recovery to try and run and it still won't take it.

I have also simply reset the phone with the RUU zip named as PB99IMG and although it tries to get going it just takes an age and then says it can't update.

Please could somebody help me, I have a goldcard made up but don't see what use it will be as the phone already has the fastboot, bootloader and recovery ability that I think the goldcard is for getting at.

If there is any more specific info I need to give please do ask and again....

Many thanks in advance

Sounds like your phone is locked to a specific carrier eg Orange, and the RUU you are using is a generic HTC one rather than specific to a carrier. Is this the case?

Sounds like a debranded phone as opposed to an unbranded one - good luck finding out the original ROM unless the seller knows what it was on

You can create a gold card to flash the WWE RUUs but it's always handy to know the original
