How to become a developer?

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help.

I love the work that is done creating ROMS, launchers, applications, widgets, and themes for our Android phones. But how can I learn what is involved? all the hardware and software restrictions and technical terms etc. Is there a guide that I can follow to learn how to start becoming a developer like Paul & co. I want to do it on the weekends and evenings and would like a dummies guide and easy to follow course book if there is one available.

I'm really passionate about this because since buying the Orange San Francisco I want to learn.
