Guest firestarter03 Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 Hi all, I am seriously considering buying a San Francisco since they are so cheap and I have just got into Android development. Since I am an orange payg customer, it looks as if the best place for me to get one is from orange online. I have had my eye on one for a while but unfortunately only came across them a couple of weeks back when they started shipping with TFT screens. I was hoping for an OLED screen and asked at a few local stores if they had old stock but they were unaware and would not boot up any phones to check (and I don't fancy paying eBay prices!). I was just wondering if you guys think there is any chance of OLED now if I buy from a shop? Is the TFT model still a good buy if I got one? I thought I would ask since all reviews praise the OLED screen. Thanks.

Guest gambieter Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 (edited) See http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...ine-grey-white/ LCD/TFT is fine, and in.that topic you van read about the slim chance of finding an OLED version. Just use the search option. Edited January 2, 2011 by gambieter
Guest uptime Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 I have seen both (UK) versions, TFT is fine & still a good buy.
Guest rayraven Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 (edited) the TFT screen isnt exactly awful, its still a decent size and resolution... Decent?, it's got a better proper resolution than the OLED one, as the OLED uses a pen-tile matrix. Besides, AMOLED shortage is kinda universal now, all companies have the problem, and the TFT coming with the new SF's is quite good, when compared against other TFT's. The SF is still a steal at the price, IMHO. Edited January 2, 2011 by rayraven
Guest silverspring Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 Absolutely nothing wrong with the TFT at all. I really can't understand what the fuss is all about between the TFT and OLED. The TFT seems more natural in colours, should be slightly sharper than the OLED and is bright. You will not be dissappointed with a TFT.

The TFT has very sharp and well-readable screen, the OLED has very beautiful colors, but the difference during everyday use is irrelevant. Even the touch screen seems to be a bit more sensitive with TFT. So I guess it is a very good buy. (Where do you find an Android phone with parameters even close to SanFran for GBP99?)
Guest uptime Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 Besides, AMOLED shortage is kinda universal now, all companies have the problem One might suspect that Samung cut down the supplies for other vendors to push their own devices...
Guest alweekes Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 My son has a grey OLED unit, and I have a white TFT unit, side by side the OLED has those beautiful colours and amazing contrast, the TFT is better on small browser text due to the pixel arrangement as has been mentioned. I've been using the TFT unit almost constantly since Xmas and with Froyo on it's better than my Moto Milestone in many ways (camera and internal speaker aside). It's got more ram, is faster and more responsive (with Froyo) and with A2SD+ enabled has seemingly limitless ability to install apps, I've got loads installed and it's still showing > 100MB free! The larger ram and faster response with what is still a sizeable hi res screen makes it stunning value for money in my book, waiting for my milestone to get Froyo now... Andy.
Guest IPB_Refugee Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 Hi firestarter03, don't worry about OLED vs TFT. I have a TFT one and I love the screen. Even very small letters (for example on web pages) are very, very sharp. You won't be disappointed. Kind regards Wolfgang
Guest rayraven Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 One might suspect that Samung cut down the supplies for other vendors to push their own devices... Kinda begs the question why they're selling their own devices with SLCD as well, in that case? The new Wave II is SLCD everywhere & Nexus S is selling with SLCD in some countries, even some people in the UK have gotten Nexus S with SLCD So, i doubt that conspiracy theory has any weight to it.
Guest SAVVVAS12 Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 The TFT screen is very good at first I thought It was OLED because it was excellent!
Guest firestarter03 Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 Thanks for the comments everyone. I had a bit of luck and managed to get an OLED one from very.co.uk! So there are still some out there even this late. And rbbrslmn, I am interested in switching to giff gaff from o2 so I will order a sim from your link. Thanks.
Guest xzyk Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 I just got me a second SF. Ordered the grey one from 'very' and got an OLED one, well chuffed ! In addition being my first order I got 10percent off and add this to the further tenner I got for going through topcashback it ended up costing me 79 quid, not bad. So it looks like OLEDs are still out there.
Guest con500 Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 I owned the Oled version of the SF but have since upgraded to the Desire. While the oled did seem more colour saturated there really doesnt seem to be any major differences aside. The desire i have is the SLCD model and the screen is very nice. Seems the Amoled shortages are evident with the higher spec devices. Orange didnt even see fit to mention on their website description that the screen has changed on the all black desire and still market it as Amoled. IMO you will be noticing minor differences but if your heart is set on oled then you may tend to scrutinize the device for variables which may lead to disapointment...My advice would be to just enjoy the SF for what it is...A proper awesome wee bit of android kit.
Guest jtc42 Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 I have the OLED version and my girlfriend has the TFT version. As TFT screens go, frankly, it's pretty damn good. The blacks are really dark compared to most high end TFT phones and the colours arent at all bad. On it's own it's a really nice display. Next to an OLED you can see the difference in colours but it's not at all bad, and the TFT even appears sharper due to the nature of the pixel matrix.
Guest monkeyfeatures Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 Check 2nd hand shops like Cash Converters etc... I snagged an OLED SF for £58 for my dad last week (quite a few cosmetic scratches on the case but otherwise fine).

(Where do you find an Android phone with parameters even close to SanFran for GBP99?) totally agree, I had the grey OLED model, and found while the colours were wonderfully vibrant it washed out quickly in bright sunlight (worse than my TFT phones) and also I found the screen sensitivity a little annoying compared to other phones. I saw the white San Fran on sale in Argos for £89 and decided to give it a try, and while the colours are slightly less vibrant the screen is brighter and sharper, and more readable in sunlight. I have also found the touchscreen to be more accurate, I would recommend the TFT over the OLED in everyday use.

I had both OLED and TFT versions of San Francisco, and I personally prefer the OLED. If only they made the white San Francisco with OLED display B)
