Guest bebelala69 Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 Afternoon all..just about to take the plunge and try to prove to my teenager that I am NOT yet ready to be scrapped.. My challenge is to upgrade his Xmas present to the " well best " O/S and it seems that nothing less than Pauls 2.2 froyo rom is the one to aim for....However, I am suffering from overburn from reading too many tutorials and watching too many videos.!!! Its a stock SF which I have managed to unlock already and I need a laymans guide to rooting and flashing etc ...Can someone who has seen them all please point me to the definitive guide... much obliged and hero in the making!
Guest Stuart_f Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 You want the very first sticky by StevenHarperUK 02/Jan: Installing the MoDaCo Custom ROM from scratch (and other ROMS), 8 Custom 2.1 ROMs - 8 Custom 2.2 ROMs -1 Total Phone Transplans
Guest Gryphonic Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 (edited) I had the same when i started. It was horribly confusing. This rom has a really easy install method (just been pointed out to me B)) and from the little feedback so far, seems to be good. personlally i'd watch the thread for a little more feedback before giving it a go though. (Edit: As pointed out by Arr Too, this really isn't tried and tested yet. Wait until its more established to try it) For the old method, these are the steps: (search the forums for how to do it - most of it is in the stickies) > Download and install Fastboot. - this will allow you to load clockwork boot loader onto your device, and is explained in the clockwork guides. > Flash the clockwork image using command prompt/terminal (depending on OS). > Download and copy the rom you want to install onto your devices SD card > Shut down the phone and re-boot it into clockwork by holding the volume down butting during boot. > Go to 'backup and restore' and take a backup Very Important incase anything goes wrong > Now go to 'install from zip' and select the rom file. > Once its flashed, reboot into 2.2  Edited January 2, 2011 by Gryphonic
Guest unholyimp Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 As above and it's easy peasy got a SF for myself at Xmas by lunch it was all done
Guest Arr Too Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 Please be aware that the "new method" (which does not use ClockworkMod) is still regarded as a dangerous activity, especially for new users or those with exotic flavours of the ZTE Blade. It's much more low-level than the "old method" (using ClockworkMod) and there is a greater risk of bricking your phone, with not much known about how to recover from bad failures (although there's not been a reported bad failure so far). In summary, there's currently plenty of information about the ClockworkMod method and there will be plenty of support for problems available on this forum. But if things go wrong with the "new method" (the update.zip placed in the image directory on your SD card) then you are almost on your own, and trailblazing.
Guest Rozzers Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 For this type of thing , I'd look for video tutorials on YouTube. I watched one by Paul explaining how to install custom ROMS  B)

Guest bebelala69 Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 Don't put superboot on a TFT phone you will get the BLUE tint bug. Thanks for all your comments . I think it all makes a little more sense now and there's no better experience than getting your hands dirty... Thanks for the tip re getting a blue rinse tooo..i'm not that old yet!!! Only concern is that I have yet to attach the SF to my XP PC and I am a little nervous about entering commands applicable to the SF and not modding my own registry ...silly I know but computers and me have a long and turbulent history ... . Any hand held tips re getting the very first part underway gratefully rec'd . Cheers all
Guest scoobydoo99 Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 (edited) As this is your first go at modding, and you're not using the phone yourself, wouldn't it be safer to go for one of the stable 2.1 roms? I've installed the Bladevillian 1.1.0 rom to 4 SF's. I deliberately went for this rom as 3 of the phones are being used by teenagers and this is their first Android phone. I already had some modding experience as I've had a Pulse that I've mucked about with for a year, I always installed the new roms and had endless experiences of things not working and rebooting - I didn't want this to happen on the phones I was giving to my children. Bladevillian 1.1.0 is a huge step forward in looks, performance and ability over the standard Orange rom. We will upgrade to the 2.2 rom once a stable rom is released and it's been well tested. p.s. this rom is fine for OLED and TFT's - we've 2 of each. p.p.s I found this thread invaluable as a starting point - still assumes a certain level of knowledge though if you're a complete novice, but use the forum search as well. http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...and-other-roms/ Edited January 3, 2011 by scoobydoo99

Had a GO AND CRASHED AND BURNED ...CAN'T EVEN LOAD THE CLOCK MOD ( DOH ) ... I have managed to create the fastboot directory direct on C drve in XP but the error message I get after " fastboot-windows flash recovery recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.8-blade.img " is error cannot load ..clockwork recovery 2.5.1.8. I am pretty sure it has something to do with the hardware wizard identifying the phone but being unable to find the drivers etc ..I've tried downloadind the drivers from the recommended places but none are available or missing...Also when I downloaded the clockwork recovery 2518 it saved as an .IMG NOT A ZIP FILE...I moved it directly to the fastboot folder on the cd? Any Clues ..Thx

Any Clues ..Thx The IMG file is correct, the command 'fastboot-windows flash recovery recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.8-blade.img' is to push the IMG file to the phone. As for the drivers, here's a link. http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...rivers-and-adb/ If you still have problems, worth trying a different USB port on your computer as one of my phones needed to use a different USB port for some reason before the laptop could see it. Make sure you unzip the Fastboot zip into the same folder as you have the clockwork recovery IMG file. p.s. once you crack getting clockwork installed, that's about 90% of the tricky stuff.
Guest bebelala69 Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 Thanks again guys but I seem to be getting the same error loading message ??? Managed to load the drivers from one of the later mirrors though havent restarted the pc yet but the hardware wizard seems happy now ..the 2.5.1.8 img file is in the c\ fastboot folder but has the " i can't open this icon" next to it. Would that be the problem ...meanwhile i will restart the old girl ( xp pc ) just in case that helps... Any ideas what I'm doing wrong ? Thx

Thx After you install the drivers on your PC, are you then following these steps exactly? To install •Unplug the USB cable, turn off your device and take out the battery •Replace the battery and turn the device on holding the 'volume up' key. The device will stay at the 'green android' screen. •Plug the device into the PC. •From a command prompt run 'fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.8-blade.img' •When this finishes, from the command prompt run 'fastboot reboot' To enter recovery mode, restart your device holding down the 'volume down' key, or type 'adb reboot recovery' from the command line. If yes, then switch everything off and try a different USB port on the PC.
Guest scoobydoo99 Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 I seem ro remember that when I installed the XP drivers, the first time it only installed the drivers for the SD card. It needed the phone to be connected with the green android screen (power on + volume up) before it installed the other set of drivers for the phone itself. Pretty sure it's a driver issue at the moment. My XP laptop thinks the IMG file is a winzip file (which it isn't - it doesn't know what it is)

Yep tried all that and a new usb port but now getting the following " fastboot is not recognised as an internal or external command, or operable program or batch file!!! I have checked again and I have a folder called fastboot on the cd with the contents of the fastboot download extracted and the villainous 2.5.1.8.img file there aswell ...I am indeed stumped .. Not sure if I should try the volcano method as i think that its less recoverable if I screw it up.. Think I need a drink!! Meanwhile , said teenager is circling in the background awaiting his moment to claim victory ..aaagh

I think the folder is meant to be on your pc's hard drive (usually C: but not always).

I downloaded it and unzipped to the C drive ( also called cd ) and there it sits as c:\ fastboot . When the folder is open you can see the fastboot windows file and the mac and liux versions too and also the clockwork recovery 2.5.1.8 .img file aswell .The img file is not recognised by my o/s though so I'm fairly sure that this might be the problem unless it doesn't need to recognise it , just push it across to the SF ?? I did copy and paste the command as I noticed that on the original sticky there was a double space between recovery so tried both ways. The SF is in the right mode and stuck at the green android though when I resrtarted the pc it again recognised the bootloader and installed it again? Can't think what else I can do..

You've got me baffled with this '(also called cd)'? Before you run the fastboot command, from the dos prompt at the folder where the files are sitting (c:\fastboot) try typing dir and hitting return - does it list all the fastboot and blade.img files? The PC doesn't need to recognise the img file.

Sorry , just an old fella trying to use an abbreviation he saw in another thread ,cd being short for C drive aswell as command !!!! Just tried the dir suggestion and it detailed all 9 files including the 2518.img file !!! At least its not just me thats baffled Edited January 3, 2011 by bebelala69
Guest scoobydoo99 Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 (edited) Yep, 9 files in the folder is correct - and yet if you paste the below command at the same prompt at the one where you ran the dir command it gives you the error message? fastboot-windows flash recovery recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.8-blade.img I actually renamed my img file from recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.8-blade.img to just blade.img so my command became fastboot-windows flash recovery blade.img p.s. I'm probably older than you - maybe just though. Edited January 3, 2011 by scoobydoo99
Guest bebelala69 Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 Retraced all the steps and reset phone ,changed usb port and now getting the error cannot load recovery-clockwork - 2.5.1.8.img !!! Do you think I should give up and try knitting , or try the volcano method or are there more sinister ghosts in my machine preventing me... Ps insults allowed if I have done something horribly stupid..
