Guest Sere83 Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 Well i've been running sebastians older R4 2.1 eclair rom for a while and I have to say this phone has got progressively worse over the time i've owned it. Current issues I'm having... 1. LAG!! really is lagging hard, got very few apps installed and it appears that I'm near capacity on the internal memory. Making everything very laggy. 2. Apps Force closing. Regularly quite a few apps force close or freeze. Angry birds is so laggy and freezes it is unplayable, Angry birds seasons wont let me get past level 4 just freezes. Aldiko force closes opening books other apps some times don't even load or just freeze. 3. Email. Email set to update hourly with the normal client, but am only getting emails through about once every 3 days. 4. Notifications. Notifactions seem to hang around after i've already checked the txt message or whatever, won't go away still says I have a txt. 5. Calls. Call drop outs (maybe be just due to poor reception though) then takes ages to re connect to network though. Don't mean to have a go but I did like this phone initially but It really has gone downhill. Will upgrading to a 2.2 Rom help?

A history of too many "free" apps, especially those that require root, isn't always good.
Guest jonathonf Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 Will upgrading to a 2.2 Rom help? I don't know. Every thread that talks about 2.2 mentions how much better it is than 2.1. How about you try one and find out? Seriously, I've been running 2.2 since Flibble's Froyo r2 or r3 (the pre-alpha versions) and even those versions kicked 2.1 so very hard. Currently running Jellyfish rls4 and it's awesome - wifi works correctly (as do other intent calls, e.g. IMAP IDLE in K9 mail) and SetCPU clocks correctly.
Guest wbaw Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 (edited) 2.2 is a lot faster, most games run ok. Angry birds is smooth except on the most complex levels, even then its just about playable, but a bit jerky. Not seen many random crashes on 2.2. K9Mail, free from the market seems like a better email client. You can clear the notifications, but they should go when you tap on them, they do in 2.2 at least. Nothing you can do about the poor reception, except find a network with a better signal. The wifi & phone reception does seem poor on this phone, where other phones would have 2 or even 3 bars, this can have none, or just one, I've had it next to other phones on the same network, it's poor. 2.2 is a big performance improvement. There are plenty of problems with the phone, but it's cheap & it has a good screen. You aren't going to get very far on Angry Birds on any other phone for under £100 on pay as you go on a stock 2.1 rom. Edited January 3, 2011 by wbaw

On the complex Angry Bird levels, wait a while before playing - give the scene time to settle in the physics engine as often not all the blocks start properly resting on each-other. A 20 second wait can make the game very smooth (until you hit something and then it is very jerky as it falls to pieces and then becomes smooth again ready for the next bird).

First I would update to 2.2. as you already mentioned you are running on an OLD version of 2.1 (I don't know if Seb had already hw acceleration and things like that enabled in this one). 1. Do these lags happen even when you just rebooted the phone? Maybe you should have a look what apps are taking the memory 2. No problems for me with MoDaCo 2.2 r3 3. Which email app do you use? 4. Which sms app do you use? 5. Never had that with any ROM
Guest overkiller0999 Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 first upgrade to 2.2, spead up mine very well! also download advanced task killer and run that everynow and then, works a charm for me
Guest Rotmann Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 (edited) If you liked Seb's 2.1 you will love his Froyo, install it and you will be very happy with your blade, like I am, very tidy and stable, battery life is very good. @overkiller0999 I don't recommend anyone to install an aggressive task killer, it just makes things worse (see lifehacker's article or the thing that Cyanogen ignores logs from ppl who have a task killer installed). Android (2.2 especially) does not need something like that. I can highly recommend Quick System Info, you can terminate some apps if you want and get system infos and also monitor resources. Here is the article about how harmful aggressive task killers are: http://lifehacker.com/5650894/android-task...ouldnt-use-them Edited January 3, 2011 by Rotmann

Guest rayraven Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 Android isnt aggressive or unaggresive, it kills apps as it needs memory. End of Story. Having free ram is overrated, not having anything in memory doesnt give you a speed boost. Having apps in it will make them open quicker when you run them.

I put a guide together explaining how to install it (link in signature) I think the phone is great for the money it just needs a little tweaking

Guest Rotmann Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 I don't know where I read this: "Be nice to your apps, don't KILL them!" That Guy, congratulations for the guide, very comprehensive!
