Guest Carlrg Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 Hi guys just wondering if testing downloaded archives within Winrar or 7 Zip is the same as checking the MD5 checksum, as i have always done it that way with no problems or have i just been lucky. I have tried to follow instruction on using a MD5 sum checker and can't seem to get it working on my Win XP machine. Thanks in advance, Carl.

No, Winrar/7-Zip check the integrity of the file, MD5 is a unique hash that tells you the file is exactly the same as the one on the webserver. While the two can go hand in hand it's not a must. You can check the MD5 in Astro file manager for Android aswell.
Guest mario999 Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 For checking MD5 i've always used this> http://www.colonywest.us/index.php?option=...6&Itemid=56 really old program but still works ok. Adds a right click menu to your file where you check the hash number.

Will check out both Astro and the colony west file and do a MD5 check in future. Best regards, Carl.
Guest Simon O Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 Hashtab, end of. http://beeblebrox.org/ Works with OSX, Windows 32bit and 64bit. Job done
Guest Stuart_f Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 (edited) I use HashTab3 which works perfectly on Win 7. It adds a tab to properties that gives you the MD5, SHA1 and CRC-32 file hashes. Edit: Damn, Flibblesan beat me to it, he clearly types faster than I do. He also speaks the truth, use HashTab.
