Guest sulligogs Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 Hi, I'm currently running Paul's Froyo Alpha 4 rom and when running Memory Usage from the market I saw a service called HTC Checkin that was consuming over 50 megs of memory. Googling around has seen some people describe it as a Facebook service, some people say it's to force OTA updates and others who have manually forced it to stop running and reported no ill effects. Seeing as this was included in Paul's rom does anybody think he knows about it? I wouldn't mind having an option to remove it from the Kitchen and see properly if there are any consequences to its removal. Can anybody enlighten me on this mysterious service? Many thanks.

Noticed that one to and removed it from my alpha 3 prebake, haven't had any problems.

Just looked at the Alpha 5 build and the closest option I saw was for the HTC IME input method. Could that have been what you had seen? If not then why had the option been removed? Is the HTC Checkin service fundamental to the operation of Android? Once and for all; what the heck is this HTC Checkin service that consumes over 50 megs of running memory???

Guest exec Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 I removed the CheckinProvider.apk, haven't seen the process since, so it's probably that one.
Guest sulligogs Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 Hi exec, What you said had done the trick. I looked in /system/app and deleted the CheckinProvider.apk then rebooted. That got rid of the wretched service. I also realised that if you navigate into the zip file that is your rom then you can remove it from there as well. That's cool if you need to reflash as the problem would have already been sorted. Would still like to know what it is though. Cheers exec!
Guest Rem1x Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the service that does all the syncing.
Guest Simon O Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the service that does all the syncing. Nope. It's a HTC service which doesn't do anything on our phones apart from wasting battery and CPU.
Guest exec Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 Yeah, would be quite weird if it was for sync since it's not in Japanese Jellyfish etc.
